Ariel is...euphoric escapism
CLIMB WITH ME...to $10k by SUNDAY!!!
I want to stay Top 20!!! :)
The air up here at no. 20 is so thin, we're lightheaded!
Yet we see the summit up ahead...dazzling & draped in snow...
$10K - I'll so something sweet involving Big Ben ;-)
I will also post our first professional video!
Castaway
I've been living like a castaway
Do my best to smile
Til your eyes & sensing fingers
Drew me to your isle
Then you sing
Come to me
Come to me
"I'll enfold you
Here I am
Here I am
I'll hold you"
I've been dreaming that you dreamed of me
Never wanted more
Now my fragile boat is leaning
Washed upon your shore
Now you sing
"Don't touch me
Don't touch me until tomorrow"
Here I am
Here I am
I'll hold you
I was born to be a castaway
hunter of the wild
lost beneath a lonely sky
but sheltered like a child with a shell
by the seaside
I feel hungry like a newborn child
riddled by the sudden tide
I'm sitting in this restaurant
Your voice is coming from inside
Hear me sing
"Come to me
Come to me
I'll enfold you
Here I am
Here I am
I'll hold you"

My attitude towards life is "Do it for the joy!" and appreciate every moment. For a little woman, I have huge love of music and grand designs for as many people as possible to be moved by it. All I want is for my sounds to chase your troubles away, help you to feel more keenly. That makes me happy like nothing else on earth.
As I've been performing music for years, I've been fortunate to be compared as a vocalist to some amazing artists (if I can move you even a fraction of the way artists like Bowie, Kate Bush, Annie Lennox & Regina Spektor moved me, my dreams are becoming real). They exaggerate of course!
I've had some very encouraging teachers and mentors, since childhood, who have helped me to find my voice and enjoyed amazing support from generous-hearted musicians, managers & producers who have believed in me along the way.
Words cannot describe my delight and pure joy at being so welcomed & accepted by the Sellaband community. The friends I am making, the endless support and cheerleading - not to mention inspiration - have become such a central part of my life.
It helps that Sellaband London HQ have been awesome & through them I have the privilege of working with legendary producer Mick Glossop. I feel immensely fortunate to have Mick's ear & formidable skill to help bring the new songs to life, on record.
And the new songs - wow! The more time I spend on them the more right they feel, the closer to the ideal of beauty I feel I'm approaching! Of course I feel like a minnow making my way up a mountainside, musically, but the journey - and the view - is awesome even from these lower slopes!
I hope to make an exquisite album for you that you will want to listen to over and over again. Thank you for believing in me. You are loved!
BACKGROUND
I come from London via Ireland, where I grew up playing irish folk and classical music until a conversion to rock music in my teens. I studied english literature, trained as a contemporary dancer and moved seamlessly from choreographing & soundtracking dance performances to performing songs with backing tracks, all manner of musicians & a rock band.
I'm all about the live performance. Developing a following on the London live scene has been gradual and rewarding, as I've performed at cool venues like The Marquee, the Bloomsbury Theatre, the Union Chapel, the Notting Hill Arts Club and countless others.
I was thrilled when a single called 'Fall in Love with Me' released through Rough Trade shops actually shifted copies and was well reviewed in Time Out among others. A track 'Icy Wastes' was also released on Law and Auder Records' cool electronic 'Female of the Species' compilation. My recording output to date!
Then I recorded what was supposed to be an album for indie release ('Spirits') and let's just say I wasn't one of the lucky ones to make it to the end of that process! Even so it was awesome to record my songs with Matt Hyde (Ash, Bullet for my Valentine), Alan Van Kleef and Nat Chan (Patrick Wolf, White Rose Movement, A-Ha) at some great recording studios.
Aside from performing music, other things I *love* to do are dancing, meeting new people and having fun. I have hosted many music parties with fellow scenesters like Pete Doherty (Babyshambles) and Carl Barat (Dirty Pretty Things) when they were still The Libertines and DJ'd at Alan McGee's (remember Oasis?) weekly party in London so I could meet so many musicians & cool folk to share ideas with.
Right at this moment I'm working on my laptop demos & sounding ideas with Mick, playing solo acoustic gigs all over London and gearing up for band shows in the new year (!!! I cannot *wait*).
Oh as well as all my wagers on Sellaband, recording our first professional video and planning shows further afield. I'm loving the journey!

For those who have expressed curiosity about the South London Press article of 31st October 2008 (scanned in my 'Photo' tab) here's a transcript:
INTERNET STAR
The internet has made musicians as much as it has almost broken record companies. Camberwell-based singer Ariel tells Dan Frost about a new website that could be her path to musical stardom
For most the internet has been a God-send. Just ask any journalist how much harder their job would be without it - the demise of Google or Wikipaedia is far more likely to prompt mass hysteria in newsrooms than a stock market crash.
But while most of us bathe luxuriously in e-convenience, the internet has proved a mixed blessing for the music industry (or just an outright nightmare). From Napster to MySpace the world's gallop towards www.everything has turned up a long line of crater-sized pothole in every record company's path, frequently wrestling control (and money) from companies and leaving consistently behind-the-beat labels playing games of catch-up and damage limitation.
Putting aside the decades of greedy execs exploiting art for money, you can't help but feel a little sorry for some of these labels, taken by surprise while everything was looking so rosy. And, as the world teeters on the edge of a fairly monumental financial cliff, it would be nice to throw some happy news their way.
But that's not to be as yet an other website has been launched in the quest to make record labels obsolete. At www.sellaband.com bands & musicians create a profile, upload some songs & then invite "believers" to make financial bids of support that will eventually pay for them to record an album. When an artist reaches $50,000 they can then claim the pledged money for the album, with Sellaband maintaining publishing rights so that a percentage of sales can be returned to online investors.
It might sound far-fetched - how many fans really have the money to bankroll unknown musicians' careers? - but the experience of a Camberwell-based performer is testament to just how effectively this new web venture can work.
Singer and musician Ariel launched her Sellaband profile in the middle of August and within 10 weeks had received pledges totalling more than $6,000.
"You get some fantastically produced professional artists on there, but you also get bedroom artists who are just beavering away," she explains. "I just took a chance to see what would come back from it and within a week I'd raised a grand, so thought 'well, we're onto something here'."
"It's a really exciting and fresh development in the industry," she continues with bubbling enthusiasm, "because it really is putting control into believers' hands."
Delighted with both the response and the way the site has brought her closer to fans , Greenwich-raised Ariel has offered to play a free and spontaneous outdoor gig in Camberwell if she reaches $8,000 by midnight tonight.
"I think it will be a really nice treat for people on a Saturday afternoon," says Ariel, whose 80s-infused music is inspired by David Bowie, Kate Bush & Eurhythmics. "And it will show people what a great concept Sellaband is and how it can really help people connect to the music they like. To have a democratic groundswell of support for new artists is a great way of bringing them to the fore, from the grassroots up."
"This is the modern indie. This is what indie is now."
Ariel will play Southside Bar, Brixton Hill, on November 20th. Visit www.thesouthsidebar.co.uk for more information. As we went to press she had raised more than $7,000. Visit www.sellaband.com/ariel to help Ariel follow in the well-trodden Internet-phenomenon footsteps of Lilly Allen and Arctic Monkeys. Also see www.myspace.com/arielmoves for more information about upcoming gigs.

Hola Ariel,
Can't believe it's 3 months, it has gone so quickly and you have done so well. Crossing everything that your New Years Day dream of 16K happens.
Sun is out here but quite cold, how is it there? Credit Crunch hitting everyone very hard, hope you are both ok.
Love and Hugs

Nov 20 2008 20:19 CET Albert - The Dream Team - Will reinvest every sold Limited Edition-cd, read my Blog
Hello Dear Ariel,
I really don't know why people withdraw parts.
Maybe it's the economy, maybe the new plans of SAB.
Maybe it's about the expensive end of the year (X-mass).
I would never do it without telling about my reasons.
My month is a complete disaster because of some real big bills that I have to pay. It's a shame my boss didn't decide to give me a big raise, LOL.
But I'm not going to withdraw any parts.
I was hoping to reinvest what I get from selling my LE-cd's (84 already). My offer didn't help at all.
I thought I sold 1 LE-cd, but that was not the fact.
It was just a normal one.
So I'm on a standstill, just waiting.
The spotlight is for Lucia Iman till she hits the 40K.
She was a friend on My Space long before she joined SAB. So she's a bit special.
I thought what I could about your request, there's hardly anything I can do. I found 1 thingy:
I've put your banner on my My Space-page.
You could keep your fingers crossed for my little shop, but I fear you'll get cramps. The cd's won't sell.
So I fear there's nothing else left than to wait.
Sorry I can't do more than this.
Big Dutch Hug,
Albert

Your welcome :) you cant stop the Rock n Roll :D
Nov 20 2008 19:01 CET Martin(Team Tiff)Nicholas
I had one part left so happily give it to you :)
A bonkers week indeed, but I remain confident all will settle down :)
Nov 20 2008 17:30 CET Cris*
My dearest rocket queen,
The will to help you is most definitely here, all the way to 50k if I could. My balance, however, is roughly 10k under yours. So no pumping new parts in Sellaband right now. I could of course take them away from someone else, but... well, I guess you'll agree that that's a very cool thing to do either. So I guess you'll have to settle for all the love and biscuits I can send across the pond this way... and maybe maybe maaaaybe when the next shipment of cash comes in, who knows - I might just blow it all on mortgage and Ariel... :D But I can't promise!
Good to see I made a little promotion, though!

Ariel was one of the first I discovered on SellaBand, I figured, why not be a believer. I am so glad I did, she is very talented and kind (which is a great bonus). I am happy to be along for the ride. |
