BACH-BUKOWSKI by Dutch pianist-singer Willem van Ekeren
is a baroque/blues fusion that challenges the musical convention
Driving counterpoint flows in union with the evocative writing of American beat-poet Charles Bukowski. Willem van Ekeren weaves together 13 poems of Bukowski's work 'The Last Night of the Earth Poems' with 13 parts of 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' of J.S. Bach. The texts are sung with a raw bluesy voice over authentic baroque music played on the piano.
The famous preludes and fugues form a flowing, essential part of each song. Willem van Ekeren simply adds a voice-line to combine the two media. The melody, phrasing and Willem van Ekeren's voice support each other as the poet reaches out to you. This melts into Bach's music.
Reminiscent of Tom Waits, Randy Newman, Bob Dylan and Billie Holliday, BACH-BUKOWSKI crosses genre and style to create classically inspired lounge jazz.
All Bukowski's poems are powerfully evocative observations of every day life.
Bukowski points out the problems we encounter and shows how we are able to survive. He puts everything into perspective in his own phylosophical and occasionally witty way.
The first BACH-BUKOWSKI CD was released in 2003. Since then, Willem has performed in Holland, Belgium, Germany and Scotland: regular concerts and festival activities such as Bach festivals, musical events and literary festivals. At concerts, not just fans of both Bach and Bukowski have been swept off their feet.
The first CD has been selling great and still is, but now Willem is working on nine more BACH-BUKOWSKI songs and also wants to take them to the US.
PLEASE HELP US REALISE THIS SOON!

Thank you all so much for helping us this first week. Without you we wouldn't be in both the Parts chart and the Beleivers chart!
You might have noticed that we have three songs now and a video. We are trying to find out if we can get more video available for you.
By the way, did you see that Bach-Bukowski is mentioned in this week's SellaBand Tribune as well and got rewarded with the Applesauce Award?
Thank you Adam Sieff!

I totally dig the Tom Waits-like voice and I'm stunned how he pulled off this blend with Bach's music - I would not have thought this could work, yet clearly it does. |

I am not a great friend of recycling but this is different. Bach, master of all masters, founder of tonality and modern harmony. More contemporary than ever. The rough voice of Willem van Ekeren sounds as if Bukowski is singing himself-smoky bars, whiskey and prostitutes. All included in the mix. Great combination! The prudent meets the sinner. |
