The Fairy Tale

Inspired by http://www.sellaband.com/belie ver/webmiss/  I started writing a fairy tale  (it has just started, so you have to wait till when I put the episodes up)

Once upon a time, in a country far far away, there was a beautiful Princess Steph. She lived in a big castle on the top of a hill with her loving parents King Walter and Queen Céleste.

Since the King loved sheep, there were lots of sheep all over the land surrounding the castle. Ofcourse they also had a few cows, pigs and chicken in a little farm near the castle. Johan, the farmer, was busy all day long, taking care about the animals.

Every day, when the Princess came back from school, she changed her beautiful dress for some old clothes to help at the farm.

A few years ago, when the Princess decided to help on the farm, her parents didn't agree at all. Working on a farm was nothing for a Princess, they thought. But after they understood the Princess loved working with animals, and getting dirty in the process, they gave in.

During winter, when days where short and it was getting dark real early, King Walter drove on his horse with-no-name to the farm to pick up his daughter to be in time for dinner.

After dinner, the Princess helped the servants with the dishes, and then went to her room to do her homework.

But one day in Summer, the Princess came back to the castle way before dinner time. She was crying loud. The servants tried to comfort her and asked what had happened. But the Princess couldn't get out of her words to tell what was going on, until the King and Queen came in.

One of the sheep was missing, and the Princess knew all of them by name. “Lily is gone”, she cried.

Immediately the servants, the King and his guards started looking for the missing sheep. They all knew how much Princess Steph was attached to her sheep.

Hours later the King came back walking next to his horse-with-no-name. He carried the missing sheep, Lily, in his arms.

The Princess ran, as fast as she could, to her father. “Daddy, you found Lily back !”, she cried. “It's allright, Princess”, he said, “We've found your sheep back”. It was then, when the Princess noticed the guards did also return. They had a man, with his hands tied behind his back, with them. “He stole your sheep”, explained the King, “I'll throw him in the dungeon”.

The Princess was very happy to have her sheep back. But she also felt sorry for the thief who was to be thrown in the dungeon, since she knew it wasn't a nice place. “Why did he steel my sheep, dad ?”, she asked to the King. “Ehm, I must admit I haven't asked him”, said the King.

So, the Princess, still dressed in her old clothes, went to the tied and frightened man, and asked him why he stole her sheep.

The man didn't dare to look her in the eyes and murmured : “I .. I had to. An evil man threatened to kill my children if I didn't bring him one of the King's sheep”. The Princess felt the poor fellow was telling the thruth, but she needed to know more. “Who is that evil man ?”, she asked.

“He owns the dragon valley”, said the poor man.

“Dragon valley ?”, asked the princess. The king ordered his guards to untie the man right-away.

“My dear Steph”, he said, “I'll have to explain you something.” The Princess knew there was some serious talk coming, since the King only used her first name very rare.

He explained his daugher about the valley, which was about fifty miles away from where the big forest near the Candleton city started. It was a very dangerous place. A lot of people died in this forest, because they didn't find the way out in time. They starved to death. In, what people supposed to be the middle of the forest, there was that vilain dragon who killed people with the hot fire coming out of his mouth. So, only a few people dared to go into the forest.

“Why didn't you tell me before ?”, the Princess asked.

“Your mother and I didn't want to scare you”, said the King.

The Princess didn't know what to say for a few moments. She just learnt about an evil man, living in a dangerous forest where there was also a mean dragon. And she also thought about what would happen to the poor children of the sheep-thief when he didn't bring the sheep. But she didn't want to loose her lovely Lily sheep too.

But then, farmer Johan, who had followed the whole conversation from aside, stepped forward. “My Lord, maybe there's a solution”, he said, “But it might be dangerous, so we'll better discuss this more private”.

The King sent his daughter and the servants away to prepare dinner, since they we're all hungry by now.

“I can go to my cattletrader in the city right away and buy a sheep which can be given to the evil man”, said the farmer, “If the evil man doesn't find out, the problem is solved”.

“Let's do it the way you suggested, but don't let my daughter find out about it”, said the King.

Johan went immediately to the city. Meanwhile the others where having dinner at the castle.

It was already way past midnight when the Princess fell asleep in her room. The Queen was exhausted, since she stayed next to bed of her daughter.

A few hours later, just before daybreak, the formerly supposed sheep-thief returned home with a sheep farmer Johan had bought.

Everything went back to normal. The King visited the poor man with his wife and daughter, just to convince the Princess he and his family were fine. She soon forgot about the whole incident.

Instead of going on holiday, the Princess preferred to stay the whole vacation, spending her days watching over her sheep. Since her mom and dad didn't like to travel too, it wasn't a problem at all. So she did herd the sheep, with her lunch and some water in a little bag with her. It was very hot and she was sitting in the shadow of a tree eating her lunch. Suddenly she saw two men coming her way. They were still too far away to notice her to be there in the shadow of that tree. What were they doing there ? She decided if was safer for her to hide behind the tree. Worried about what would happen, she watched the men come closer. The road to the castle wasn't close to were she was, and there wasn't supposed to come anyone over here.

The sheep were still busy eating grass, like if there was nothing wrong. The Princess wished her father was here.

The men took a sheep with the name of Francis with them. They put a leash around his neck and pulled him with them. Francis wasn't afraid of anything, so he didn't knew this was wrong.

When the men were at a distance where they couldn't see her anymore, the Princess came from behind the tree. “Home, home”, she said to the sheep. They automatically headed back in the direction of the castle. They were familiar with this command, since the Princess already used it for years when they were returning home.

Instead of going home too, the princess ran in the direction were the men and her sheep disappeared. She was careful about not getting to close to the men, but it took her a little while to find back the tracks of their footprints and Francis' hoofmarks.
