About me
Check my blog for my latest non-Sellaband recommendations.
I like a little bit of everything. Whatever the genre is, I probably have at least a couple standout songs that I adore. But I do lean pretty heavily towards classical, techno and... stuff that's just weird or comedic.
I have a powerful weakness for video game music - before Sellaband, OC Remix was my sole online music haven.
I can be kind of a spaz about how often I log on here or send replies, but I do like comments and recommendations!
I'm also on Twitter: http://twitter.com/mijae

My latest favorite stuff that isn't on Sellaband:
All India Radio
An incredible Aussie band that just put their album up on Amie Street. They've been compared to Portishead, but I think another reviewer described them best as simply "mind-numbingly gorgeous."
Their site: http://www.allindiaradio.com.a u/index.html
Amie Street store: http://amiestreet.com/artist/8 9325
Lola Flash
Another Aussie act, a 5-piece group from NSW. One of those pieces is a viola, which gets them extra bonus points. Actually sounds a bit similar to All India Radio somehow - ambient and dreamlike, with haunting vocals. They came on Triple J once when we were almost done driving home, so we had to sit in the driveway till the song ended to find out who they were.
Their Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/lolafla shmusic
Starship Amazing
Fun electronic music that's very very heavily (old-school) video-game inspired. Derek is also known as the "Happy Video Game Nerd", who reviews great underrated games. He knows his shit.
Download for free on their Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/starshi pamazing
Or buy for cheap at Amie Street: http://amiestreet.com/artist/9 9455

Intensely dreamy. A welcome escape from the regular
verse-verse-chorus-verse-bridg e-chorus chunk song into a nice
meandering wander through an imaginative soundscape instead. I feel
like going to watch the original Willy Wonka movie again.

The aptly-named "Calm" is very soothing and relaxing to
listen to, but won't put you to sleep - the unusual chord progressions
in a couple places keep things interesting, and the pace isn't too slow. "Psalm" has a LOT more variety. Its beautiful eerie opening really showcases the range of their sound. It quickly lightens up though and gets into more of a laid-back groove, then just keeps on changing in a very natural way. These guys are great at setting moods and creating whole compositions with a great variety of sound rather than a simply-structured song.

Gorgeous instrumentals that make a long building composition of music rather than a straightforward "song". I could just keep listening to their stuff all day. My favorite discovery on this site, period.

Lady Haidee didn't grab me right away the way some of the earlier recommendations from my review contest did, but R.I.P did have a nice haunting mood that made me want to hear some more. In some places she reminded me a just a LITTLE bit of Garbage, but only in a vague way. I don't want to try and pigeonhole her since she does sound unique, just trying to give an idea of what sort of genre she belongs to. I mulled about it for a while on whether I'd want to buy a part or not, but seeing her up at the top of the list now, I decided I don't want to miss out!

Daniel Ward-Murphy | 17.03.08 | 1
Listening to Daniel Ward Murphy's tracks, I liked the live recordings
the best. These songs brought back very vivid memories of one of
the few times I've been out somewhere with really good live music, having a good friend show me his favorite local place when a friend of his is performing. My favorite of the 3, "Heart on My Sleeve" especially evoked a wonderful intimate and nostalgic atmosphere. It sounds like I'm right there with the artist, and makes me wish I was instead of sitting in front of my computer. It's one of those songs where listening to it at night is somewhat dangerous if you don't want to fall into a binge of sentimentalism and writing over-emotional letters to people you lost touch with.

Grant Stevens - The Aussie Assault!!! | 09.03.08
Blues is not one of my usual genres, but that just means it has to be really good stuff for me to stay interested. I had no problems here! "Longhair Music" was an excellent introduction. Grant's singing has got LOTS of energy. Over the next two slower songs I got to appreciate the sound of his authentic voice even more. "Monotony" was just plain beautiful. It's very well constructed and soulfully delivered. I bet it would be fun to sing along to. I'll have to remember to bring some of these songs along next time I have a road trip.

NIKI THUNDERS | 04.03.08
I liked the sound of Niki Thunders right away. The synth sounds and
clear. emotional vocals evoke a bit of an 80's feel, which is right up
my alley, but still sounds fresh rather than just being retro. I love
those solid guitar riffs, and made sure to turn the volume up. "A
Vietnam in the Neighborhood" was my favorite from the profile... no
wait, "The Sickness of Dreams" is. I enjoyed the lyrics in this one.
