Some of you may have already read my Bio (the one about being an insomniac, self-diagnosed bi-polar, going against the stereo-typical Asian expectations of becoming a doctor/lawyer/engineer...to follow the dream of performing for audiences and recording albums...) if you haven't read it, you can go to www.lijiemusic.com. if you have, this section will pick up where the last left off.

After moving out of the city of Angels (aka Los Angeles), I made San Francisco home base for 2 years, and toured throughout the west coast and a few states in the east, performed at Borders Bookstores, Apple Stores, clubs, bars, coffee houses, outdoor/indoor venues, sidewalks, weddings, church gatherings, and in China. And being the mover/shaker that I am, left San Francisco for Berkeley, then to Walnut Creek, and from Walnut Creek back to my home state of Washington. Guitar in hand, keyboard in tow, writing and singing all the way.

And why? Because I have this crazy dream of becoming a performing artist...the kind that sells albums upon albums upon albums...recording amazing beautiful music that people will sing to in their car, dance to at their wedding, cry to when their hearts are broken, and make love to by candlelight...and the thought of performing at big venues is just thrilling...

After my stint in the Bay Area, I packed up my car and drove home to Washington. Which is where I have been for the last year and a half. Banging on the piano that I played when I was eight years old, and trying to figure out how another album would come to fruition.

Enter SellABand.

This idea of raising funds is daunting and challenging and incredibly exciting. And knowing that it is a group effort, a team effort, between Artist and Believers, makes it very very possible. And for those reading this page, know that I will do everything possible to deliver a fantastic 2nd album. It will hopefully be the kind of album that stays in your car, on repeat...to be played over and over and over...

and over...

and over again.

ROAM
V1:
We always sit and talk about the weather
And after all these letters well there’s nothing left to say
And you and I we’re both two of a kind
We’re always wondering why
Something more hasn’t come our way

But I refuse to believe
This is the only life for me

CHORUS:
So I roam
These open roads
The nights are bitter
And the days are cold
So I roam
These open roads
In search of better
In search of home

V2:
You seem surprised I see it in your eyes
But I can’t lie
This was never what I had in mind
And walking this line pretending everything’s fine
Well this isn’t living it’s just getting by

And I maybe naïve
But not too proud to leave

CHORUS:
So I roam
These open roads
The nights are bitter
And the days are cold
So I roam
These open roads
In search of better
In search of home

Back from NYC...what a city...the energy of NY is like no other city...someone asked what my favorite part of the city is...and besides performing and meeting new people, I must admit I love running for Subways...it's exhilarating and exciting in a simple sort of fashion.  But you have to be willing to overlook the dirtiness of some areas, and the occasional stench of urine.  And you meet the most interesting people and have such off-the-wall unexpected conversations...had a good chat with 2 fellows about indie movies and McCauley Culkin (I am hoping for a comeback because everyone loves a good comeback story!)

Besides subways and such, the show at Pianos was awesome...it gave me the chance to connect with new friends, followed by my first slice of NY pizza...mmmmm...fantastic stuff...

Anxious and excited for the flight to New York tonight...typing very fast...high chance of mis-spelled words...for those in Manhattan, come to Pianos on Saturday night for music!!!

Can't wait to meet you.

xoxo,

-Lijie-

Sitting at a coffeeshop in Los Gatos...strangest weather here today...unusual for this time of month...drizzling, grey skies, ominous...getting ready to perform in a few hours...must stop typing soon... I find that it distracts one's mind from fretting about other things...the coffee is good...this laptop is driving me crazy...the sensors are out of whack because it keeps jumping around and I end up typing in other parts of a paragraph when I just want to finish a sentence...damn...it's like it has a life of its own...very Terminator 2...wouldn't that be crazy...a world of computers and robots...xoxo - Lijie-

QUESTION:
"i dont get it lijie, my album cost less than $6,000 to record, and
produce 1,000 CDs of. why should yours cost $50,000?" - James
LeavingOutLastName

ANSWER:
Hey James,

It's good to hear from you. I wasn't aware that you had an album
out, good for you.

Ok, to answer your question about SellABand and why my next cd should
cost $50K...

First of all, I can not speak for SellABand as I'm not sure how they
did the math to achieve the $50K figure. But I can say for myself that
after doing some thinking, and looking over SellABand's website, I found
$50K to be a fair number.

Secondly, I believe that everything is relative. Compared to ROAM,
which fyi cost about as much as your cd, $50K is quite a lot. But compared
to other major label releases, $50K is not very much (many albums cost
upwards of $100K). So then I asked myself "has ROAM received the
kind of distribution, recognition, promotion that I had hoped for?" And the
answer was no. So my next step is to make the next cd better. And
I really like the concept that SellABand has come up with. It unites
the Artist with the Believers.

Going back to the cost of an album. After looking over SellABand's
producer/studio/A&R list, I can understand why Artists and Believers
must raise $50K. We would be paying for professionalism and quality. Am
I saying a cd recorded/produced/pressed for less than $10K is
unprofessional and lacks quality? No. I am very proud of ROAM as I'm sure you are very proud of your cd. But what I am saying is that SellABand offers a great list of producers/studios/A&R people...and their job is to make an album sound top-notch.

But here is the main reason why I went with SellABand: For the first
time, this means that the Believers who help raise/fund the $50K will be
there from beginning to end, and they will also gain from digital
distribution revenues. Let me say that again, for the people who pitch in the
$50K (which for some, may be an investment), you will actually make money back when the tracks sell via digital distribution.

Also, from an artist's point of view, can you imagine how amazing it
will feel when the $50K goal is met? To know that there are people
willing to support and fund another album... That to me, is worth more than
$50K. Like the Mastercard commercial says, it is priceless.

Thanks for your interest. I hope this email has helped to answer
your question.

take care.

Stunning voice matched with beautiful songs. There is a real maturity to the music and I'm especially impressed with Lijie's achingly honest lyrics. She reminds me of Joni Mitchell.
