First Lady of Indian Soul
“Mira’s voice and music is an exquisite combination of passion, sensuality and spirituality,” Deepak Chopra Mira Veda began her musical career at the age of 10 when her parents encouraged her to sing at the temple. Born in India and raised in Canada, Mira stayed close to her heritage as she learned classical hymns in raag and sang them with a ready tabla player and harmonium every Sunday during her early years. As she grew older, the restrictions of classical religious music could not contain her; she looked to other styles of music to expand her awareness. Her interest led her to blues and jazz where she would sign out tapes from the library to build another dimension to her repertoire of influence. She listed to Etta James, Lou Rawls, and Sarah Vaughn. During this time, Mira also joined the school band, excited to experience the music as a participant rather than an observer. After a year, Mira was forced to leave the school band because of strict parental discretion, they felt the “music was not as important as math.”
Disappointed and distraught over the loss of her first love Mira left music altogether. She gave up singing, studied diligently and finished with honors in Philosophy and Mass Communications. Having concluded her academic career for the time being, she was again at a crossroads. She wanted to explore the roots of her beginning and provoke the cost of being an Indian woman in urban culture. She needed to inspire her life through music. Giving into the passion of her youth, she embarked on a search to find someone who could understand her idea of creating a hybrid sound, an integration of two cultures, two worlds. It was this ache for some authenticity in fusion of music and culture that facilitated a parallel in voice and music.
It took more than a year before Mira connected musically with singer/songwriter and producer Chin Injeti. The Juno award winning artist brought an infectious hybrid of intoxicating exotic sounds to compliment Mira’s smooth, sexy voice. They spent four months in Vancouver, British Columbia collaborating, writing and recording the skeleton of Mira’s album. The conceptually ambitious liberation of Mira’s insight appropriated her Indian heritage, massaging it softly into the mix. Mira craved to integrate cultural expression and be the engine of change. Her first album, Infinite Love, took nearly 2 years to complete, and was just the beginning of Mira’s exploration as an artist. Having worked relentlessly to preserve a sense of distance and be more than an uncompromising personality in the musical solicitation of the avant guarde elite, she has written music that mirrors us, that which inevitably unites and inadvertently divides. She has created a reflection of human relationships. “Infinite Love is about love, longing, pain, and shame, everything that you and I experience. The music is about bringing your heart closer to mine. Making us one…no color lines, no race, no religion. Just the music,” Mira says. Songs like “Love Yourself” and “Stolen” investigate the dynamic relationship to the self and others. It is what Mira does best, examining the self, the soul and the heart.
Mira recently spent time in India connecting to her roots and exploring the authenticity of music in India. Although she says music is “a part of me which I cannot seem to let go of,” she doesn’t live through it. This attitude means that Veda has turned down lucrative opportunities she feels may have interfered with her artistic integrity. Her fearless creative vision has won her respect in the music community which was reflected when she was elected to the GRAMMY board of governors in 2007.
