Concrete and Copper: This is my only instrumental, and probably the most dear song to me. I was living in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio at the time I composed this piece. At this time I was one of the only 2% white people to live there, and of that two percent were the KKK who had decided to march down MY the street that day, the most fear driven, death ridden, poor, addict accumulated street at Noon, 12:00, to protest equality of rights to all people in America. Meetings had been held to stop this large group, but American Government allows Freedom of Speech, which is a blessing, but also a curse since it allows the KKK and other hate groups to march. For fear a riot would break out, and people would be hurt, I started meditating. I had not lived there long, so while trying to meditate for the first time there I realized I was surrounded by concrete and copper, and I could not feel the grass beneath my body, or hear the birds in the air, or most importantly, the silent vibration. My frustration with not being able to meditate created this song. After composing it, (approximately 15 minutes) I immediately climbed to my roof to play for the city. I played the song over and over and over and over... I could see people gathering in preparation. People had large bricks from the old buildings falling apart, grasped with fear and anger in their hands, ready to throw. A mother with a crack addiction sat out on her porch stoop with her 9 babies with no father, holding each other barefoot, no clothes, and certainly no food. As the garbage swirled in the wind like tumbleweeds, realizing for the first time her babies were more important than her addiction, she closed her eyes. I closed my eyes. I don't know how much time passed... but my roommates at that time, climbed to the roof to get me, and told me at 11:58 the KKK decided not to march and were escorted from downtown with the Police. I climbed down, it was 12:48 and I had a sunburn, a song, and peace. What more could a girl ask for.
Screaming From Inside- (Warning! You may find this controversial) I rather enjoy basking in the vast ocean of knowledge available in this world. One of the most fascinating aspects for me is religion (although I do not affiliate with any organization) and politics. Unfortunately I happen to be interested in the most controversial of topics, as I see people tend to become upset over these things. I am also fascinated with dreams, and I tend to write a lot of songs in my dreams. This song is one of them. In my dream I was eating an apple by a tree near a very large lake. A religious figure came to me, and I began to argue with "him", saying there was too much death and pain at this time in life, has it always been this way? Why? And if "he" wanted people to understand "his" message why didn't "he" write it down clearly without corruption? yadda yadda- and "his" response was, and he was quite irritated with me - "The message is still there. Life is about intent. A person can tell you they love you before they ask you for something. You can tell your father you love him because you are his daughter. Do they hold the same intent? Listen carefully: I am not here to distract you or make you be anything but you. You know it's the truth. And I honestly believe there's more to life than to be batteries for people who don't care about you. When will you realize the days that go by you will NEVER get back! Don't trade them in! My biggest regret is not doing what I was put here for"- and "he" stood up and began to walk away. I told "him"- "Hey, I really like those words"- he said with a smile and laugh, "Put it in a song, but if you do, give me credit." I woke up, I wrote it down, and now it is. I hope you enjoy.
Boxcars and Wine- It had dawned on me one day that I was not sure I wanted to live the life of a vagabond any longer. I felt low, like I didn't have what it took in a game that would make a gambler cry; the game of the music industry. This is an emotionally driven piece, written in Truth or Consequences, NM USA and is constructed to inspire one to really dig deep and find one's mission/purpose and follow through until completion.
