Singer/songwriter from Toronto, Ontario, Canada!
I started to write songs on the old piano my parents bought when I was 14 or so. My father forced me to take piano lessons at age 10, which I hated. I would go into recitals and play for crowds of old people and wonder just who this music was for. Four year later, though, after Dad let me quit lessons I rediscovered the beauty of that old piano and started to write a song here and there.
My mother has a love of music and she and I would listen to countless records and tapes of her old favorites. I fell in love with The Beach Boys. I still think Brian Wilson is the greatest melody writer of all time and his vocal arrangements may never be surpassed by anyone else. My belief about songwriting is to focus on the melody and the message and let the rest fall into place. Songs tend to come out of nowhere and build so organically you almost forget writing them in the first place.
At 18, I went to universtiy where it seemed like everybody except for me knew how to play the guitar. So, I had a couple buddies show me some chords and taught myself the rest. I'm not the best guitar player, but I get by - at least enough to serve a song. When I was 21 I started to play open mic nights back in Nova Scotia where I grew up. It was something I stopped doing soon after. It's been alomst 9 years since I played a set of music anywhere. Over those years, I have written a lot of songs, but these ones are for me. And now, after sharing some of them with some close family and friends, I've decided to share them with you. If you believe in me, that's amazing. These are songs that helped me get a little older and maybe even a little wiser. If they speak to you, then that's a special thing. Thanks so much for listening.
I'm sorry about the quality of my productions. I did my best with my Mac and Garageband, but I don't have any great mics or anything too high-tech. I just base the sounds on my ear and get them out and lay down the tracks. I hope you enjoy them despite this!
Music is a gift we give ourselves.
