I AM ARIEL

My attitude is “Do it for the joy!” Performing and writing music for others gives me thrills. All I want is to take you away somewhere full of feeling, drama, romance, neon colour & promise.

I’ve been fortunate to be favourably compared to some amazing artists. Early influences include David Bowie, Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Cure & Depeche Mode and loads of punk, rock & 80s electronic icons, more recently artists like Goldfrapp, Bat for Lashes, La Roux, Muse, The Killers, The Knife & Hot Chip. You might describe the music I make as wonky pop.

Along the way I’ve encountered musicians, managers & producers who have believed in me and added some fuel to my bonfire. Being so welcomed by the Sellaband community has been a joy. The friends I am making, the support and cheerleading – not to mention inspiration – have become an important part of my musical life.

I’m always spreading the word about my music because I believe many many more people will love it & feel the joy in it. I plan to make gorgeous music for you that you will want to listen to over and over again.

MY BACKGROUND

I grew up playing Irish folk and Classical music. My family were music lovers who nurtured my talent. At school I lead the choir & won prizes for musical promise and poetry, and this gave me a sense of where my strengths lay.

I studied English Literature at university and blossomed, creating electronic music and dance performances. Carrying on with music & dance after graduating, I took my work to Berlin, Prague & Moscow where I met all manner of artists.

As my music has developed, it’s been all about good writing and giving intense performances. Cutting my teeth on the London live scene has been rewarding – I’ve performed at venues like The Marquee, the Bloomsbury Theatre, the Union Chapel & the Notting Hill Arts Club.

My track ‘Icy Wastes’ was released on Law and Auder Records’ ‘Female of the Species’ compilation, then my debut single ‘Fall in Love with Me’ was released through Rough Trade & other independent record shops. It shifted copies and was well reviewed in Time Out and Artrocker Magazine among others.

It’s been an awesome experience to record my songs with Matt Hyde (Ash, Bullet for my Valentine), Alan Van Kleef and Nat Chan (Patrick Wolf, White Rose Movement, A-Ha) at some great studios. I now enjoy the collaboration of producer Mick Glossop, well known in the industry as Van Morrison’s sonic guru and for working with great rock artists like Suede, Frank Zappa, The Waterboys & Sinead O’Connor.

2009 has been a year in which, by making master recordings of my best work yet, by hitting the live circuit and crowdfunding $20,000 to take it to the next level, my music adventure took a quantum leap forwards. I’m excited about what’s coming next – hope you are too :-)

NEW MASTER RECORDINGS

I’m here, you’re here, we’re all here together because….THE MOMENT HAS ARRIVED!!! I wanted you to be the first people in the universe to share the magic as you’ve had a magic effect on my musical life.

After months of toiling happily over vintage synthesizers, dulcimers, kalimba and a ’cello trussed up in microphones, drinking infinite cups of coffee, writing vocal lines on my laptop on the bus and criss-crossing from Camberwell to Chiswick with the boot of my old banger full of instruments and gear, the new tracks are COMPLETE!

We promised you inspiration & quality. Now we’ll let YOUR ears & hearts decide if we’ve come close to delivering. For myself, I can say that when I listened to the latest mixes an enormous smile spread across my face that still hasn’t faded. That’s what it’s all about – Doing it for the JOY

How far can this go? YOU, my friends & fans, gave me a massive boost on this journey towards making music that knows no walls and laughs at time. I know that the next leg of the musical adventure starts here, RIGHT NOW.

So please, dear friends, listen & enjoy. If you enjoy the music, come & see me play live & share the tracks with your friends. We can all be super proud that these tracks came into being because of the positive, creative side of individuals in this web community – my Believers, A&R Adam Sieff & not least of all (!) Mick Glossop.

NEW DEAL ON SELLABAND

Some of you will by now have heard that Sellaband are about to change the service they offer to artist & believers. While all the details are not in yet, and while there may be much spirited debate, I wanted to keep you – my believers – informed about the vision I have for my own project.

There are those who say that “the album is dead”. I think that’s nonsense – many music lovers like me still buy albums by the artists we love. Also, as you may have noticed, I’m hot for ideas & want to record what would in the 70’s have been called a ‘Concept Album’ about a certain biomechanoid’s adventures in the city…(check out YouTube & my friend DingDongBell’s profile to learn more).

However – and this is the big ‘but’ – it’s grown rarer and harder for unsigned artists on Sellaband to raise $50,000 to record and release a CD longplayer without the assistance of a New Zealand bank & winning a Race for Parts (no disrespect to Katie, who is awesome, and I’m delighted she got there with good luck & talent).

Having been here a year now, I don’t see myself maintaining that same level of intensity on this website. I would rather be out there promoting the potential hit recordings I have in my hands now & let my dream of recording & touring a concept album progress organically. Thinking Big while Living in the Now, if you will.

SO…I wish to be adaptable. You’re listening right now to what I can achieve with my awesome producer and a bellyfull of creative fire. How about lowering the target so I can record a smaller number of tracks to an equally high standard AND – most crucially – have essential funds to promote them, so that more people will get in on the Rise of Ariel?

You won’t get a heap of CD albums in the end (unless you want them & we can raise enough to print them), but you will get special Ariel Perks which we will work out together. To that end, I’d like to invite any of my existing Believers – as well as any who are thinking of joining in – to ask me any questions and make any suggestions as to the kind of Ariel Perks you would like to see.

Please bear in mind that I don’t make promises I can’t keep! So if a personalized ‘Ariel’ Bear Suit or dinner for two are Perks I won’t realistically be able to honour, I may have to decline ;-) Once you’ve given me an idea of the kind of thing that would make you happy to hold or increase your investment, I’ll be back to you quicksmart with a response.

It may take a little time to have these discussion with enough of you to be sure that we really are all moving together in the right direction.
