Updates

Hi everyone,

So here we are, winning the SEAT competition has brought quite a bit of attention towards our profile and that has made us very happy. Our support status has gone up quite a bit, so thank you very much to all our believers, let's hope many people will follow your example! Don't hesitate in talking to your friends about us. We're only a few steps away from being in the top 10 for the Christmas competition, and we would be extremely happy to feature on the Sellaband compilation!

You might also have noticed that we have changed our budget to $30,000. When we first registered to Sellaband, we decided to see things big, and just to be safe we thought we should stick to the old system, which consisted in raising $50,000. Now that we have put together a more precise budget, it turns out we won't need that much. We still intend on releasing a good album and promoting it, and $30,000 sounds to us like a perfect amount to reach that goal.

Us winning the SEAT competition has also brought us to being published in Icelandic National newspaper Fréttablaðið for a rather big feature article, and even a short mention on the front page, as being the first Icelandic band to really be a part of the Sellaband community and to have won this competition.

The article is in our photos, and here's a translation of it:

“A band of intellectuals who met in Iceland

The intellectual band The Esoteric Gender just won an international competition held on the Internet. The band is composed of foreign students from the University of Iceland and a university lecturer.

“It was a big surprise for us. We didn’t expect to win this at all,” says singer Lisa Jamesdaughter from Manchester. The band, who plays spell-binding electro-pop, won with their song Pretty Muted Blue. The competition is called SEAT and the Sellaband.com members can vote for one of the ten songs that are nominated each month. The bands that win are then sponsored towards their album budget. The website users can themselves sponsor the album and get in exchange part of the benefits taken from the sales.

Lisa moved to Iceland in 2003 after having graduated as a sound engineer from Beatles’ Paul McCartney’s art school in Liverpool. She registered for a course in Creative Writing at the University of Iceland where she met Frenchman Jean-Christophe Salaün. Together, they formed the band The Esoteric Gender and shortly later joined drummer Thomas Brorsen Smidt, who studies a Master’s degree in gender studies. “Our first concert was in Café Rosenberg. We needed a big drum that was lent to us by Egill Ólafsson. I was told to go and knock on the door of this house but did not imagine he was actually living there. Suddenly this guy from the Stuðmenn opens the door, he was very friendly and lent us the drum,” says Lisa.

One extra member joined the band later on, it was Gabriel Malenfant, from Quebec in Canada, who teaches philosophy at the University of Iceland. “He was our teacher at university and we found out that he was a guitarist as well. It’s quite funny that he would teach at University and now be part of our band.” It was later on that recording and sound engineer Tony Platt, whom Lisa met at McCartney’s school, encouraged them to take part in this Internet competition. He has recorded performers like The Who, Led Zeppelin, Wings, AC/DC, Metallica and Bob Marley.

The Esoteric Gender is thus quite an intellectual band. When asked whether their studies were mirrored in their music, Lisa answers they certainly have things to say. “Our newest song is about what kind of influence literature has upon us, and we sing also a lot about gender questions. Some texts can sometimes come across as quite feminist, but not always. I wrote a text for example about how women are capable of killing men emotionally,” she says and laughs.

The band is based in Iceland and is considered to be Icelandic even though all members are foreign. “Reykjavik is a very practical place for us as a band and there is a good international community here. We see ourselves as an Icelandic band because we created it here and get a lot of inspiration from our environment,” says Lisa.”

We were quite amused with being called "a band of intellectuals". :-)

We are about to take a break from the band for the Christmas holidays, but we have many more surprises to come. In 2010 we will start putting up more videos online for you to discover what we sound like live :-)

Best,
JC

Upcoming updates and Song of the week

Hello all,

Lisa and I have been quite productive and almost finished a brand new song. Just a few adjustments and we'll be able to put it online! We can't wait to share it :)
Also, we will soon record a new version of "Do not disturb", closer to the live version we've been performing here in Reykjavik, Iceland. To celebrate this, we're offering anybody who signs up to our newsletter a free download of the current "Do not disturb" version, which will soon be an exclusive ;-)
Just go to our MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/theesotericgender) and click on the "Free download" widget in the "About The Esoteric Gender" section!

Our support status has now reached $410. It's still far from our target aim, but we're still happy, we've received a lot of positive feedback from Sellaband members and it means a lot to us. Thank you very much!

I'll end this little blog to thank you for voting for us for "Song of the week" on TalentCast.nl!
"They're here" is now the Song of the Week, and we're very excited about that, and very glad people liked it! It's a song we love doing live, full of energy ;-) hopefully we'll be able to post some videos of us performing us in a few weeks.

Another round of thanks to the TalentCast team for constantly keeping us updated and for being so nice and supportive. Listening to the new playlist right now, it's got quite a few gems!

Best to all of you ;-)
