Souladikts Biography
Since ‘Souladikts’ hit the scene performing around the city they have been steadily building a fanbase. Their songs are in English and Spanish and they bring their melodies and language to the Canadian mainstream audience with sincerity. Lead singer Carla Casanova’s vision is to bring her English/ Spanish songs to the Canadian public as well as the Canadian Hispanic Community. Like her counterparts Shakira, Santana, Mana, Juanes and many more…Carla sees no limit for the band. Carlos Chapa, the main composer and guitarist/bassist for the band had been in a few bands in his native Mexico. After coming to Canada he joined a rock band named “Rustic” which enjoyed some success on the Canadian scene in the late 80’s/ early 90’s. Humberto Casteneda (Guitar) and Kalin (Drums) complete the band. The Souladikts have been performing at key events/ festivals like ‘The Carousel of Nations’, ‘Venezuelan Bazaar, ‘Ecuadorian Association Benefit Relief Concert, and Oakville Midnight Madness
Through their success at the ‘Second Cup’ open mics in Mississauga hosted by MAC, they were asked to perform on Rogers ‘Daytime’ TV. They definitely made the crew at Rogers ‘Daytime’ TV believers!!! They were asked to return in June 2008 to perform again. Souladikts have been featured in La Guia Spanish Magazine, the Oakville Beaver, www.torontohispano.com (mainpage), and are featured on the Mississauga Arts Council’s website and newsletter as well. Within two short years, Souladikts have accomplished more than some bands that have been out there for double the time. The have been invited to open for ‘The Gardenias’ (Spanish rock band) whenever they perform, constantly get invited to gig and have sparked the interest of a seasoned producer ‘Edgardo Moreno’ ready to take on their debut album. Souladikts wants to continue to gig and complete their full-length album, then tour nationally and abroad. They want the Canadian public young and old, English –speaking or French-speaking to sing-along in “Spanglish” (a combination of Spanish and English). “I was influenced by Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, as well as sounds from my culture” says Humberto. “We hope to make music for all listeners” says Kalin.
Lead singer Carla’s voice has been compared to Shakira and Jann Arden alike.
Above all, Souladikts are real musicians who are serious and dedicated to their craft. They take time to write meaningful songs and write vintage arrangements that are reminiscent of the 60’s yet translate well into this era. After witnessing a show they are sure to leave you saying “I’m a souladikt”.
