The Quahaugs
(Kwah’ HOGS ) are the musical creation of singer, songwriter and guitarist Kaika Kale. Kaika hails from the New Hampshire /Boston area. Musically, Kaika defines The Quahaug sound as a “sonic melding of The Gin Blossoms and Billy Bragg, with a little Matthew Sweet circa 1990 thrown in for good measure.” Translated into layman terms, this means plenty of jangly guitars, perceptive lyrics, and refined melodies.

The Quahaugs independently released debut album, Venus mercenaria, started taking shape in 2005 shortly after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast. Kaika Kale explains the motivation behind the CD this way, “my in-laws live in New Orleans and my nephew is a student at Tulane University. I was deeply affected by what this storm did to New Orleans. I revisited the city seven months after Katrina ravaged the area and I couldn’t believe how bad things still were in what I like to think as my adoptive home town.”

Kaika felt compelled to chronicle the destruction he saw in song. Weeds Amongst Flowers was the resulting musical creation (see the video on our Sell-A-Band profile). This song and a desire to do something for the city he loved, drove Kaika to head into the studio. The end result is a 10 song offering called Venus mercenaria. Kaika plans to donate a percentage of the net proceeds from the sale of this CD to the Music Rising Foundation. The foundation's goal is to bring the music back to the churches, schools, and city of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

Venus mercenaria was symbolically released on August 29, 2006 to coincide with the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The CD was self released on Kaika Kale’s own independent label - Bathmetric Records. The entire CD can be heard streaming on Kaika's website www.thequahaugs.com

Kaika Kale is currently seeking funding to help finance the recording of a follow up album. The first album was recorded in just 4 days on a shoe string budget. "With more substantial funding, I believe I could create a more stylistically cohesive album that would not only showcase my growth as a songwriter, but generate substantially more revenue for those willing to invest in my music."

Thank you for your consideration and support!

The Quahaugs are in for the long haul on SAB, but it's been two long years since we independently released our debut album. We are itching to record our new material which we believe is light years ahead of what we have released in the past, so we have asked our closest SAB believers to withdraw their parts to help us make the new album now instead of later. So in short, we're hibernating in the studio this summer and will emerge later in the Fall with new music, new energy, and a new commitment to SAB and our fans. For our remaining believers, we ask that you have faith in us and stay tuned for a sonic punch in the face. You won't be disappointed.

Eternal Clamnation,
Kaika Kale

I'm frequently asked about the meanings or inspirations behind my songs. Although I love to discuss the process of songwriting, I have mixed feelings about totally revealing what a specific song is about. This stems from when I was young and would listen to the radio at night before bed.

Songs are very powerful and can create vivid images in the minds of listeners. I would create these multi-colored worlds centered around the music I heard on the radio. My imagination would run wild and I would become obsessed with certain songs. Then, sooner or later, I would hear an interview where the artist would describe the meaning behind a song and my interpretation and the colorful world that I created around it would be blown out of the water. How depressing it was to learn that what I thought was "Rock The Cash Bar" turned out to be "Rock The Casbah"! Thank goodness I never learned more about ELO's song "Don't Bring Me Down". What does "Don't Bring Me Down.....Bruce" mean and who the hell is this Bruce guy??? For these reasons, I always hesitate when asked to elaborate on one of my own songs.

Despite this feeling, I will talk about one of my songs, "Full Bloom". This song has a special meaning to me because it was inspired by one of my favorite American poets, Robert Frost. Frost was a New Englander like myself. He wrote about the natural world and man's place in it. While in school, I was required to memorize many of his poems. To name a few..Mending Wall, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, Birches, Acquainted with the Night, and The Road Not Taken.

My song "Full Bloom" started out as a songwriters challenge. A bookworm friend of mine remarked to me one day that Frost's imagery and word choice was very musical. My friend then challenged me to write a song using images, words and phrases found in Frost's poetry. Before anyone asks, NO, I did not lift any lyrics or plagiarize Frost. I went through ALL of Frost's published poems and reread them. Then I created a list of words, ideas, titles, phrases, or anything else that came to mind when I was reading them. I took this 5 page list that I had generated and used it to create the song. The title itself, Full Bloom, was inspired by Nirvana's In Bloom, which ironically is a song written as an insult toward people who ignore the meaning behind songs. How's that for full circle? Until next time...

- I just discovered SAB a few days ago. I'm intrigued by the concept both as an Artist and a potential Believer for other musicians. Hopefully, my music will connect with other believers and we will work our way up the ladder to $50,000.

A little about myself. I independently released an album (Venus Mercenaria) in 2006 on a shoe string budget, but thanks to my good friend Pete Weiss and his Verdant Studio in Athens, VT, we made it sound like a million bucks in just four days. In the early 90's, I worked as an engineer at a large recording studio in Manhattan NYC. I learned a lot about recording, the industry, and got to meet a lot of cool artists including Matthew Sweet (my fav), Brendon O'Brien, BB King, TLC, Wu Tang Clan (not very friendly), Rocket From The Crypt (super friendly), and many others. I saw how poorly many of their labels treated them and how clueless many of these artists were in terms of their knowledge of the business aspect of the industry. I vowed that I would make my own music or my own terms and be prepared and plan for success.

I've up loaded three songs that represent what I think are my most commercially viable songs for your preview. These songs best represent my musical vision. My songwriting is pretty diverse so if what you hear on SAB is not your 'cup of tea', please check out my website at www.thequahaugs.com to hear every song on my debut album. They meander the musical landscape from Alt Country, Pop, Acoustic, to the tongue & cheek Mollusk Station which is my homage to the B-rated horror film.

Have fun and think about Believing in me and my music. I'd appreciate your support.

You've gotta love seeing a musician on a mission.

If you're like me, you could listen to this music a few times without ever recognizing what it's about (ok, with the exception of Weeds Amongst Flowers, which should pretty well explain itself at a glance...) but still find it quite enjoyable to hear.

When you finally do pick up that one line of a song that makes the meaning click in your mind, you realize that the writing is one of the Quahaugs' great strenghts.

Brit influenced US male solo artist Kaika Kale produces very listenable well-constructed songs. Echoes of The Only Ones and (as he says himself) Billy Bragg in his neat and well-delivered material.
