Info

Thick As Thieves was formed in the summer of 2004 by guitarist Aaron Benson and drummer Mike Cotter. The two first crossed paths in late July while frequenting the same late-night bar scene in Allston. A fatefully spilled drink led to their first meeting and over the course of several conversations they realized that they shared many musical interests. Aaron was in the process of completing his MP&E major at a local music college but having just purchased a guitar, he was interested in getting involved in the process of songwriting. Mike had been playing drums from a young age but was forced to abandon the instrument to help his family recover from the locust plagues and drought that had devastated their farm in northern Illinois. The cleanup process took the better part of a year due to a lack of federal funding but was eventually completed. With his home life in order, he moved east to Boston to pursue his profession of choice.

The Midwestern pair began composing lengthy guitar/drum arrangements that defied conventional timing and song structures. The songs generally originated in a brief guitar riff or a snippet of a beat before developing into full-blown tunes. Their work culminated in a rough demo (entitled "Lifted Sparrow Catacombs") that featured 3 songs totalling 47 minutes. While it was an artistic success, it lacked the immediacy and energy of a full band. After a lengthy discussion an effort was made to bring new players into the fold. Bassist Matt Harmon had been working on his own material while pursuing a solo career in engineering and musical production. He crossed paths with Aaron while the two were working on an ill-fated musical/concept album by a local band called Hourglass Figure. At the same time in late August, Mike met an up and coming writer named Tyler Littwin. Despite the fact that he had never played guitar nor sang in a band, he was recruited to do both as part of the band's effort to avoid any and all musical cliches.

After a string of noisy but fruitless rehearsals, the quartet began to come together. The name "Thick As Thieves" was plucked from a William Blake manuscript and taken as a band name. Despite getting banned from the first venue they played at, the band spent two years touring and writing songs. Inspired by a childhood spent next to the ocean, Tyler had written a 235 line poem called "Overshore & Undersky." This text became the framework for the band's first album, "We Planted Driftwood And Nothing Changed" which was released in May of 2006.

Howdy!

Just wanted to pop in and give you a heads up on Sommersby's October Competition!

If you haven't already heard, the competition (hot on the heels of his recent neck-in-neck September fiesta) will offer 20 parts for the winner and is open to all artists that have between $9999 and $0 in budget.

Please check the forum for updates on contest rules and regs….starts 25 October!

This is a great opportunity for you. Campaign with the believers to let them know you'd like to be nominated and encourage them to vote for you when the time comes.

Of course, if you'd like to, or you know someone who would like to, donate parts for the prizes in the Competition, just send (or have them send) Sommersby the details under a message marked “October Donation."

Hope you join in on the fun and GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!
