Invest 10 part and we'll send you a free Debut Tonic rays Album recorded in Northern Thailand, original rock!! it kicks arse a few tracks on our profile now, so have yourselves a little taster.
for 15 part we will send right to your door our first debut album, that rocks, and also a limited addition Tonic rays T-shirt.
The Tonic Rays formed in the north of Thailand,
My name is Marie Dance and i front the band.
I'm a 24-year-old British girl, originally from a small town called Abingdon near Oxford and
later moved to Brighton to study music for two years. I now
live in Thailand touring the country with my band mates.
Music is in my blood, it's a gift and a curse
Joe Cummings, the band's lead guitarist and harmony singer/
occasional lead singer, hails from the USA. Joe has lived in
Thailand for over 20 years, and knows the country, language and
culture very well.
Myself and Joe share songwriting duties and feel that our
individual styles of writing fit together very well. We share
the same taste in music and together we act as the core of the
Tonic Rays.
Sun Ray, the bass player, comes from Thailand and is a very sweet
and humble guy. Like many bass players he is quiet and calm but as
you get to know him you begin to see how intelligent, both
musically and world-wise, he is.
And finally after going though several, the Tonic Rays now have a
committed drummer, Mark Iwamoto from Japan. Mark is very
enthusiastic and loves to rock. And he believes.
We have just finished recording our debut album of
original rock. A few tracks from the album are on this page.
We don't plan to stay in Thailand. Next year we will be heading for either the U.S or the U.K. To move up on sellaband would be a dream come true for me, I am so greatful for the handful of believers we have so far, it gives me a reason to carry on.
Chiang Mai has long been one of the best places to watch live rock in Thailand, but original offerings are generally thin on the ground. Finally, there's something to write home about. The Tonic Rays, a local true-to-roots band has generated quite the following and an impressive original repertoire. Though it's hard to capture singer/guitarist Marie Dance s engaging enthusiasm on disk, not to mention veteran guitarist Joe Cummings cool laid-back swagger, their first and eponymous CD should please anyone with a yen towards edgy old-school yowling. Cumming's 'Too Lazy to Break Your Heart'--a sly, swinging rocker, and Dance's 'Sleep'--an infectious bouncing lullaby. are two of the standouts on this tangy, twangy ten-song compilation.

AMAZON.COM REVIEWS OF THE TONIC RAYS (5 stars!!!!!!)
Like Great 60s Bands
***** (5 stars)
I hear strains of The Jefferson Airplane and Fleetwood Mac after
Christine McVie joined. Joe Cummings' singing and guitar also
remind me of Lou Reed/Velvet Underground a bit. "Strangest Kind"
and "Home" are excellent; I can't hear them enough. "Too Lazy to
Break Your Heart" is laugh-out-loud ironic. Nice job, Tonic Rays!

My Kind of "Strangest Kind"
***** (5 stars)
I first learned of The Tonic Rays a couple of years ago when they
were playing honky-tonks around Southeast Asia and considering
recording the songs the growing crowds were requesting over and
over. This CD is as good as any indie production I have heard and,
as far as I am concerned, worth the wait. The songs span the Ray's
repertoire, with exceptional guitar work and solid drumming –

Must Buy
***** (5 stars)
If you enjoy music, then your love this album, excellent drums,
guitars, great bass, strong vocals, varied and exciting songs to
blast over your music system. Wonderful lyrics, all originals, if
you listen to music a must in your music collection. – Penelope A.
Jenkins, UK
Great CD
***** (5 stars)
I love this CD. Super production - raw and edgy. Beautiful male
and female harmonies playing off each other the whole way through.
Rough at times, tender at others. Poignant. Fun. Funky. Favorite
tracks: Home, Strangest Kind, Too Lazy to Break Your Heart, and
especially the gut crunching journey through break-up - Icon. Five
stars. – David Freyer, Thailand
The Tonic Rays’ self-produced debut CD is fetching extravagant prices on Amazon.com. While Amazon itself is waiting new stock (on the way!), third-party vendors such as InAndOutRecords and MadMusicMania are offering the CD for $26-40 each, more than double Amazon’s $12.98 list price for the same album.
The band is not sure why this is happening, but we’re flattered that the CD is considered this valuable! We’ve been searching Amazon for similar markups on out-of-stock CDs and haven’t seen any -- other than for used or out-of-print CDs.

May 2008
"You will remember that this time last month we were planning to
move to Bangkok to make bigger things happen for us.
Unfortunately, the whole Bangkok plan didn't work out; everything
was too expensive, the deposits for apartments and travel expenses
around the city added up to a lot more than we were hoping for.
Also venues have lowered their pay for bands recently, so we
decided it would be a hard uphill struggle to do the move.
So it looks like it's back to plan A which involves me moving back
to the UK for 6 months to get one of those 'real jobs' for a
while. Joe is gonna write a few books which he will get paid well
for. With expense money in hand, we hope to travel to the USA early
next year to tour.
In meantime we will continue promoting our music and writing new
songs for our second album, which will hopefully be financed by
our beloved believers here on Sellaband. We plan to keep our
Sellaband presence strong as we have worked so hard every day to
get this far.
Whatever else, we still have a rocking album out there, which we
believe in 100% and want to even improve on next time around with
your support.
Meanwhile, keep passing on the word!"

April 2008
scary.
we've just finished 8 gigs in a row and i'm exhausted, we did
three kick-arse gigs in Pai where the wooden floors nearly caved
in with the crowd jumping and dancing to hard. it was good fun.
Richard and sommersby are helping us with an incentive for new
believers, which is going well and is very exciting. thanks guys
xx
and our plans for bangkok are looking more likely. i have thought
a lot more about going back to england for a while to work and to
make some money, but i have decided that it would be a shame to
leave the band for six months just to work in a factory so i am
staying and we are still working on the move to bangkok.
we are hoping to move at the end of April, after the 'Songkran' (a
Thai holiday where the whole country has a water fight for 5 days
to welcome the rainy season) it's gunna be crazy!!!!
me and Joe arrived here in Bangkok this morning after a a night on
the night train, and tonight we are going to check out another
couple of clubs.
we almost have a contract to play three nights a week at a rooftop
bar called 'Gazebo' it's very cool. right on top of a huge
building looking down over the city, you can see the sky train and
all the sky scrapers of bangkok from up there.
we also have another offer from another, smaller bar to play once
a week.
so four gigs a week is enough for us to live on and pay our rent.
when we move her we will look for one more gig so we play five
night a week and can save money for our journey back to the west.
so our next mission is to find a couple of cheap apartments, we
have a few to look at, wish us luck.
other than that, i am still addicted to sellaband, it keeps my
hopes up and makes me feel like i'm making progress every day
which is very important for a girl like me.
we have three new songs ready for recording and i'm looking for
inspiration to write more. i've learnt that i can't force out
loads of hit songs, i just have to wait for them to come to me. it
can be very frustrating but worth the wait.
it's hot season now and it's hoooooottttt, i don't like it and i
try not to go out till the sun goes down ha ha. but it's rainy
season soon which i love being English and all that. monsoon rain
is my favorite and it always inspires me to write.
i'll keep you all updated and look out for pictures of the
songkran festival !!!!!
rock n roll
March 2008
ah so here we are in march and what’s new?
we'll I have been thinking long and hard about where this band is going. sometimes I think to long and hard, but together we are finding solutions to our problems.
The main problem is money, I am just about surviving on the music. we have loads of gigs but I feel it is time for more than just survival. my plan is to save money so I can by a ticket home to my family for Christmas, after that I want to head for the big bad world, the U.S.A. I’ve always been a bit intimidated by the U.S but these days I long to go. And I plan to be there sometime in 2009.
I feel I am ready for the world; an I’d even work in a factory for a year if that’s the only way I could afford to go. And believe me I’ve thought about that option too.
we have decided that the only way to make these things happen while we are here and so we can stay together as a band is to move to Bangkok to find the big venues and to play some well paid gigs.
Me and Joe went to Bangkok a few weeks ago to see what is on offer, we found a few great venues which I’d be happy playing for a while to save money, and we met up with a few of Joes contact on the Bangkok music scene.
we are looking around for cheep apartments and if all goes well I would like to be moved by mid April. And we’ll be going back in a couple of week to do some more looking around.
our rhythm section, sun and mark are prepared to go which makes me very happy, I love there commitment and we all know it's the only way forward.
so... big bad city here we come.
I have written a song just for the occasion called 'big bad city' a pure rock n roll song, can't wait to practice it with the band.
I will keep the blogs updated, please wish us luck, making money as musicians, ha we’re gunna need all the luck we can get.
but if it can be done it will be done.
thank you to our believers you give me extra strength every day xx
Febuary 2008
we have spent the last two week giging and hanging out with a great band from the U.S colorado, They are called 'Something Underground' two brothers with great harmonies, a crazy dog on drums and they are the nicest people you could ever wish to meet.
we have been sharing the bill up in Pai, the north of Thailand at a bar called Phu Pai, where the bamboo floors where shaking.
We are now in Chiang Mai And the Tonic Rays are sandwiched between two Something Underground gigs at a Music venue called Guitar Man.
Something Underground on Wed 13th
Tonic Rays valentine special on Thus 14th
Something Underground on Fri 15th
after the weekend the boys will be of back to the U.S but it's been a pleasure hanging out with them and rocking the Mountain towns of Thailand.
check them out and maybe you'll catch them along there travels.

January 2008
we had a very rock n roll time on way to Bangkok for the launch party.
the night train was great fun and our support band got very drunk as usual, they were great fun to travel with
The owner of the venue in bangkok let us down very much. he promised great equipment, a sound man, lighting , and a temporary stage.
we got there and all we had to play on was a very crappy amp for Joe, and a piano amp for me. aaahhhhh. No sound man, No Lighting and no temporary stage.
we had all kinds of reviewers there and journalists, and even a writer from the rolling stone had turned up.
The audience says it sounded great and we got through with the hopeless equipment but i personally am very disappointed with the venue for all the empty promises.
but hey thats rock n roll for ya, you just can't win them all .
luckily we got our selves another gig at a bar called 'Rain Dogs' the night after.
now the owner of this bar spent good money on a good P.A, good amps and a good stage.
the gig that night went great, we rocked the place hard, and the crowd screamed for oncores and responded to our originals very well.
we sold all the CD's that we had brought with us, and felt so much better after the night before.
So we decided that this is the perfect venue for the launch of our next album some time next year.
and we'll even be going back in a few weeks with a band call 'something underground' from the u.s. to rock the place again.
and as for the CD launch venue, well... we'll never be playing there again... ha ha ha you live and learn ay?
so now all the parties are over and it's time to go back to rocking hard and selling loads of CD's, it's going well and i'm very happy with the sales so far.
