SellaBand Presents... Part 2
The competition is halfway!
![]()
The ‘SellaBand Presents... Part 2’ competition is exactly halfway, and from what we read and hear it is keeping both Artists and Believers very busy. It is turning out to be a very exciting race and the final results are very hard to predict. When we decided to write a story about the competition so far, there was no more than a $500 gap between positions 5 and 12. And there was less than $200 between T-ka, So What, GD Allan and Tiffany Gow, all trying to hard to make the final Top 10 on March 13 and thus have one song each included on the next official SellaBand CD. Since initiating this story, the ranking has somewhat changed (as have the budgets!), but we like to include the opinion of these four artists nonetheless...

Why should your music be included on the SellaBand CD?
”Well, I think my steady rise and my reaching the 10000$ this week proved my Believers have confidence in my music and that I belong ON the compilation. Plus, I really think being on the CD could bring more radios, TV and press to promote the SellaBand concept and also the artists present on the compilation. Thus, that could mean reaching the $50,000 sooner for my Believers and me. My last argument is that I'm doing a sort of promotion that will last until I reach the 50k. If you become a Believer whatever the sum you invest, you get the 3 MP3's available on the website. If you invest 10 parts you get a signed copy of my CD + a T-ka pin-back button. And if you buy 25 parts you get 1 t-shirt, 1 CD and 1 t-ka pin-back button... All you have to do is send an e-mail to t-ka@t-ka.fr to get them.”
Do you think you will make it to the final Top 10?
”My Believers and future Believers will tell! I really want to be on it, as I really feel this is a huge opportunity for the concept of SellaBand to spread and also for the artists on the compilation to be broadcast. But I can't tell the future. I just have hopes & dreams.”
How much $ will it take to make it to #10 on March 13?
”Well being in the top 3 in Charts 2 means you already cumulated more than 5,000$, so for me being in the top 10 considering that other in the top 10 will rise too would mean at least gathering 2500$ more in the next 2 weeks. Which is quite a sum. But it already happened to me in the past to gather such a sum in 2 weeks' time. It's all up to my Believers and new Believers actually. But I did a gig last night and I'm gonna do another one on March 9th in Paris and will tell the audience about the concept so that more new Believers can join in. Now it's up to the Believers.”
TIFFANY GOW
Why should your music be included on the SellaBand CD?
“I feel my music should be included on the SellaBand CD, as it is distinctive and has a sound of it's own. It is great down to earth to rock. My lyrics are sung from the heart and I truly believe in what I am singing. I really believe in myself and my music. I am working so very hard to make progress on SellaBand and to encourage Believers that I would be very grateful for being included on the fantastic SellaBand album. I would also love to see a good amount of Rock/metal artists on the album, as I completely adore this style of Music. I think I rock! I hope you do too!”
Do you think you will make it to the Top 10?
“I truly do hope that I make it into the final Top 10. I am getting so much support from my Believers. They are so wonderful. I am working hard to be a part of the Top 10. I would love to thank Mr Martin Nicholas for being so supportive, he Believes in me so much and is determined that I stay in the Top 10 and make the SellaBand album. He truly is a wonderful human being. Mr Walter Mulder is working so hard to spread the word too-thank you Walter. A huge thank you very much to all my Believers. I would love to make the album, I would be very honoured and grateful. It would be fantastic to own a CD that included myself and my best friend Brian of Vegas Dragons!!! How cool would that be!!!”
How much money will it take to make the Top 10 on March 13?
“I am not sure exactly how much money it will take to cement a spot in the Top 10 .The competition is so very close and there is not a great deal of money separating each artist, except perhaps for the top 5. Artists need to be working hard and letting Believers know why they should be the Sellaband album. I am doing this very thing and then hoping that I am fortunate enough to be included on the album. If you are making general progress each week, as I am lucky to be- then hopefully I will make it. Thank you so very much to my beautiful Believers and the awesome Sellaband team. I really appreciate this opportunity.”
SO WHAT
Why should your music be included on the SellaBand CD?
”Because our song will add a little young Dutch freshness to the CD and it will make that great CD even more fun!”
Do you think you will make it to the final Top 10?
”We dont know, it all depends on the Believers!”
How much $ will it take to make it to #10 on March 13?
”It will take exactly $6430!”
GD ALLEN
Why should your music be included on the SellaBand CD?
“Success in the music business means reaching as many listeners as possible. As an artist I have a passion for making music and creating great songs. The SellaBand Presents Part 2 CD could provide much needed exposure for my music. I want to showcase what I do. I write my own music, sing, play most of the instruments, and mix and master all tracks. I’m focussed on making great music and hope to work with a top class production team. The feedback I receive from ‘believers’ is inspiring and their constructive input adds to my creative process. If one of my songs is on the SellaBand CD, my music is exposed to an even wider audience. It is a professional package with other great talent! I’ve dreamed of this opportunity for a long time!”
Do you think you will make it to the final Top 10?
“I really don’t know at this stage. I have a chance and I’ve had such a great response to my music. Since the competition started I have gained 20 new Believers and existing Believers have increased their Parts. I have received enormous encouragement too for my new songs. Whatever happens, I am so grateful to everyone supporting my music, that is such an honour in itself!”
How much $ will it take to make it to #10 on March 13?
“I can’t answer this. People are putting their hard earned $ into supporting my music and this blows me away. I am very grateful. I think I’ll go and kiss my pregnant wife, and write another song… ;-)”
Competition Lowdown
For those of you who don’t already know, SellaBand is currently running a competition called ‘SellaBand Presents... Part 2’. This official compilation CD will comprise of 10 songs from as many different SellaBand artists. Those 10 acts who manage to add the biggest number of Parts to their budgets in the time frame between February 13 (Tribune 22) and March 13, noon CET (Tribune 26), will be offered the opportunity to have one song on this CD. This album will be sent to radio stations, ad agencies and media companies all around the world, and will also be for sale on the SellaBand shop at cost price. On a separate page, called Chart2, you can follow exactly (live 24-7) what’s going on.
I’m a Believer
In our weekly series of portraits of Believers, we travel to Austria this time. SellaBand and our artists are experiencing a lot of love and support from this small but historic middle European country. And they don’t come any ‘bigger’ than Walter Braunsteiner...
Who are you?
”My name is Walter Braunsteiner and I am 35 years old. I am a programmer working for an insurance company. I am single and live in Vienna, the capital of Austria.”
How did you come to join SellaBand as a Believer?
”It all began with an article on www.orf.at (the official website of the Austrian broadcasting company) in the beginning of November when Nemesea reached their $50,000. I was curious and after I heard Lily´s songs I decided to join a few days later.”

You have already spent a big amount of money. What are your motivations for doing that?
”Well, I spent money only for these artists who I really like. And because I really like them I want to support them. Beside that I am convinced that they will be successful and so I hope my investments will bring a return.”
There is a remarkable number of very active people from Austria on SellaBand. Why is our concept doing so well in your country, do you think?
”I think the most important point for SaB was to be mentioned in the Austrian radio and on their website. Afterwards it has been growing by itself because the concept is a very good one.”

You are currently Clémence's biggest Believer. What makes her so special?
It’s the mixture of talent, good and melodic songs, her brilliant voice and well, she is pretty too. All these things are helpful to become a star today. A few weeks ago I said: "Madonna was pretty, too when started, Madonna had good songs, too, when she started, but Madonna never had such a brilliant voice".
When do you think she will reach 50k, and what kind of album would you like her to make?
”I think she will reach 50K at least in April but I hope she will get there already in March. Hmmm, I like her songs and her current style, but it is her decision what she wants to do in future.”
Are you a SellaBand addict?
”Yes, it looks like that I am a SellaBand addict... I visit the SellaBandsite every day and have already bought a lot of Parts...”
Is there anything you'd like to change/add to our website?
”Artists’ merchandising via SaB is just about to be launched. With this extra service the site is in very good shape!”
Q + A
Wetwerks
It took them a while to grasp the full potential of SellaBand, but once they had decided to embrace the concept, they really went for it. And it’s good to see some genuine heavy rawk from the Us of A climb the SellaBand charts. And now that they have landed on page 2 of our search engine, it is about time we make room for Wetwerks in our weekly Q&A...
Give us a bit of background on Wetwerks, please.
“There was a comic book started in the 90’s called “Wetworks”. It was one of the earliest to use digital technique to enhance the artwork, and it broke new ground changing people’s perception of how far the medium could be pushed. Though the name sounds the same, our music has nothing to do with the plot or the story - but we’re always trying to push the limits of our craft, so we spelled it “Wetwerks”. Perhaps you could think of us as the garage-band musical equivalent. With our songs, almost everything starts out on acoustic guitar. Then we take that and enhance it from there. At the core of our music is a song in its simplest form, but we’re always looking for ways to refine it into something more. We love the acoustic roots – but the production process is always an adventure. The band has remained independent simply because we have been able to. The availability of pro-level studio hardware at “home theater” prices, combined with the blazing speed of computers has put home recording capabilities off the chart. Our latest demo track “The Way Back Home” is an example, because we were able to produce it completely in-house; the writing, recording, production, mix and master never left our one machine. If we combined this with a 50K budget, and some professionals in a top studio, you have something truly compelling. That’s why we are here. As a live band we roll as a four-piece: Seth Warden on lead vocals and guitar, Dan Castle on lead guitar and backing vox, Rob Parzek on drums and most recently Jesse Downing on bass. In the studio, the primary recording and production team is Seth and Rob.
About two years ago we produced and recorded a bunch of material on our own, and then sent it out to West Coast producer/engineer Rae Dileo for mixdown. It was a gamble, not because we were worried about Rae’s work, but because we had no reference for whether our D.I.Y. recordings would give him the proper building blocks for final output. It was sort of like working blind to your final result, even though you spent thousands of hours on a very specific vision. The process took over a year, and once the material was initially mastered we put it out there to see what kind of feedback came in.
The first real indication that we were on the right track was the phone call in late November of 2005, which went something like this:
Caller: “You guys want to open for Bon Jovi?”
Rob: “Huh? I’m not interested in your phone survey!”
Caller: “It’s Billy Zero from XM Radio”
Rob: ‘Oh.’
And so, thanks to a radio station contest, we were given about a week and a half to get ready for the craziest show of our lives. Bon Jovi was apparently touring the States with a different local act opening the show each night. A video of it can be seen here (Bass guitar is being covered by good friend Tyler Krupsky)
After that experience (which literally blew our minds and scrambled our heads for more than a few months afterwards) we settled back into day jobs, studio projects and occasional gigging. That is, until we discovered this web site.”
What made you join SellaBand?
“There are a lot of reasons why this platform is so cool. First off, it is truly global and it is designed to eliminate barriers, not create them. The amazing response we’ve received from places extremely far away from here shows proof of that. Our Believers have been phenomenal. In addition to our great supporters here in the States, a big thank you goes out to those in the Netherlands, the U.K., Austria, Germany, Australia, Spain and, just recently, Gibraltar was added to the list of places where our tunes are being played! Rock!! ;)
It is the best compliment to find that so many unique people have discovered something they can relate to in our music. On top of that, SellaBand promotes sustainability, and from the perspective of any artist it is a strong reason to get involved. It is the idea that you can keep doing what you do, while growing in the process.”
It took you a while to get going on our platform. Were you hesitant at first?
“Yes, we were completely hesitant. The last thing we wanted to do was take our existing fan base on a crash-course in Internet gullibility. For the casual passer-by, this concept has a flavour of “too good to be true”, so we spent a ton of time researching it. SellaBand it turns out is far too transparent to be pigeonholed by mere trash talk. As a curious person, you can walk around this business model, kick the tires, and take it for a test drive. The proof is in the pudding. True, many big investors are waiting to see if the distribution portion of the platform can generate real returns, but at the end of the day, the $10 per-part model, combined with the fact that the CD will be a Limited Edition release saves everybody from worry. If you remove “sales revenue” from the equation it still remains a minimal-risk investment. This is one of the reasons we actually invest our own money in so many other artists on here. Of course, we enjoy the music they create - but that CD will be a collector’s item that took $50,000 to deliver and put out there. That is huge. Our ten Limited Edition Cubworld albums are going to fetch way more than $10 a pop on game day! The same goes for any other artist that makes it. If anyone wants to sell or trade a Ltd. Edition Nemesea disc drop us a line! We’re bummed we missed out! These upcoming releases are going to be downright epic.”
What are the band's ambitions?
“Our goal has always been: To create, and have the result be fuel for further creation. In other words, ‘Artistic Sustainability.’
Oh, and to see the world. :)
How do you plan to reach the 50k?
“1) By communicating to everyone what SellaBand is (and is not).
2) By rocking as hard as we know how.
3) Repeat 1 and 2
This platform is so new to people and completely different from what they have grown used to, that our main goal is finding those who have yet to discover it. We also provide something for instant gratification. When you invest, we give you access to exclusive content and HD Downloads. High Definition Downloads deliver audio that has not been compressed, so it is completely identical in quality to the CD you would buy in the brick and mortar retail store. The only difference is that you download it. Along with newly re-mastered songs from our last record, we will be publishing exclusive bits from our live shows and studio work on the portal as well.”
Are there any other SellaBands you particularly like?
“A lot! In a community this large, the sheer amount of talent is staggering. There are so many great artists on here, in fact, far more than we can afford to invest in right away. But, when we can afford it, we go for it. The current roster on our Believer page (in no particular order) is: Second Person, Cubworld, Clémence, Maitreya, Lily, Kontrust, Kirt, Vegas Dragons, Kane Sole, Headphone, GD Allan, Francis Rodino, and The Balducci Lift. We also have to tell you about our friend and collaborator Matt Byers who just started out on SellaBand. Matt is a classically trained pianist, arranger and composer and he is responsible for the haunting piano melodies at the end of the song “Awake”. His solo music is a combination of electronic, classical and new age and is co-produced by Rob. Check it out.”
Why should people believe in Wetwerks?
“Well, if after listening to our music, you Believe we have what it takes to craft something worthwhile with your money, then get on board. We rarely “try” anything, we just do it.”
Adam’s Apples #5
I just checked my email and JohanV is screaming for this week’s update. As you all know Sellaband is an international operation and working in different time zones can have its drawbacks. But Johan does get an extra hour in bed each morning.
Now it may surprise many of you but the Adam’s Apples team of two hundred trained monkeys is not infallible and some great artists can and sometimes do slip through the cracks. Many thanks therefore to those True Believers Roy and Empire of One for pointing out the excellent Jon Robert, although to be fair to my room full of chimps he did sign up in December before this column started. Any artists you think are deserving of an “apples who missed the fruitbowl” award let me know at the address below.
This week’s Core Spins include the new Sellaband theme song “5 Beers For Breakfast” from good old boys The Marty Sutton Band, the peculiarly English avant garde guitarisms of Verian Thomas and “Those Happy Few”, the oh so ugly there’s no main picture deathgrind of Gerard and their hangover kill or cure “Suicide Squad”, the quite excellent grunginess of “30 Seconds” from In Itself, the oh so catchy but wait for it to kick off-ness of London Greyhound’s “Grand Central”, yet another Utah resident and the soulful D’Monn with “Your Love” and the very basic but fetching “Walk Away” from Minus The Hero. Special applesauce mentions for the extremely well nourished and sartorially challenged N-U-endo whose “Freak Nasty” resonated somewhere deep in my latent soul……….you had to be there. And also for name of the week which has to go to Dungbars’ Dauphin – what do you buy in a Dungbar? Why don’t you use your real name of Adam – nothing wrong with that!
Kimo Watanabe & Wife
This week’s Apples of Desire go to three exceptionally talented newcomers, none more so than Hawaii’s own Kimo Watanabe. To paraphrase Sellaband’s veritable Dagmar (that’s Doctor D to you) and Queen Of Believers Lucretia, “The Cubworld fans will like this too.” They’re right – three beguiling songs that make you feel good and in “I Won’t Let You Down” there’s a potential monster lurking. Maybe it’s the weather or a more relaxed lifestyle but Kimo’s mellow voice and bright guitar, slack key tunings and ukelele will increase your wellbeing and brighten your day. I’ve been walking around a grey and rainy London (what’s new?) with “Morning On Haleakala Highway” in my ears and could almost feel the sand between my toes. Go listen, encourage and invest – that’s what you’re here for, isn’t it?
www.sellaband.com/kimo-watanabe
So on to Lightwires who are a Dutch four piece band that slipped on to the site with little or no fanfare but are worthy of some serious consideration. The songwriting is very creative - the hook of “Can We Go Back” is particularly engaging with an excellent and uncluttered arrangement. The other two songs are quite different but there’s a strong continuity running through all the material that makes this band stand out. A video would be very useful and there are no gigs showing at present, so whether this is a live band or not remains to be seen. But there’s real promise here………
Dewi
And finally to Dewi - a talented and motivated singer who formerly achieved limited success on “Idols” but has seen just how dangerous the Dark Side can be as she lost direction and creativity - a high price to pay. She has retaken control of her musical life and is a perfect example to all you Artists and Believers that whatever you do in life, do it your way with as little compromise as possible. Just remember that both the cream and the crap rise to the top, but not always in that order! Anyway, back to Dewi and the songs - “Symphony In Air” is my clear favourite here and features some truly gorgeous backing vocals and a delicate classical guitar accompaniment. “She Will” is a catchy little pop song but a rough demo although the feel is all there. You get the feeling that this is a girl on a mission with something to prove – if that’s true she’s got every chance for success here.

Meet & Greet with Clémence in France
Competition closed
Everyone on Clémence’s profile page seems to agree. She has the voice of an angel and the potential of a superstar. The producers of Dutch daily news show Eén Vandaag, seem to agree as well. And because they want to make a special report about SellaBand and how it is our mission to connect artists with their fans, we are inviting three, Dutch speaking Believers to travel to Paris to meet Clémence in person.
We have received a great deal of emails of dutch Clemence fans over the last couple of days. Three lucky winners have been chosen to travel to Paris and meet this talented young lady. This weekend the documentary will be shot. It's unclear when the program will air but we'll keep you informed.
Here at sellaband HQ we want to thank all the believers that have participated in the meet & greet competition.
Weekly Update
The week that lies behind has truly been one of our best so far. Thousands of new visitors checking out the site, resulting in a healthy number of new Believers, especially from the UK, thanks to the special BBC Report that we told you about last week. Some $30,000 worth in Parts has been sold in the past 7 days, and it is clear to see that our Chart2 competition is heaving a major impact on some people’s wallet activity!
Chart analysis
With almost 400 Parts sold ($4,000!), Lovely Lily takes the number 1 spot on the Weekly chart. Although Clémence is not far away, with a $3,450 increase at #2, it is still kind of refreshing to have a new number one from time to time, isn’t it? Second Person (with that $30,000 number in total budget now only just around the corner) are truckin’ steadily at #3, and other Top 10 mainstays such as Mandyleigh (#6), T-Ka (#7) and Maitreya (#9) manage to sustain their healthy increases. Biggest gainer of the week is Tiffany Gow (see elsewhere in this Tribune), who is readying herself for a spot on the ...Part2 CD. Trail (at #5, this week) have just passed the $5,000 mark and GD Allan (#8), another big gainer has now nestled himself firmly on page 2 of our overall search ranking. Furthermore we welcome back Portugal’s Nearfield (#11), who’ve also passed the $5,000 threshold, and we welcome Jon Robert (#15, Cubworld is a fan, so check him out if you haven’t already), and Dewi (#17), from NL, who signed up less than a week ago and is somewhat known in her home country, as she is a former finalist of the Idol TV series.
Artist Merchandise
Now you can show your love for your favorite SellaBand Artists by wearing their T-shirts. Second Person, Vegas Dragons, Lily and Daniel Ward-Murphy are the first four artists to have their own T-shirts available in the official SellaBand shop. Each artist has 8 different shirts (4 men, 4 women) already available in the EU store. The shirts will be made available in the US store later this week. But if you live in the States and can't wait, then you can order them in the EU, you only have to pay a bit more for shipping.
Here are the direct links to their shirts:
Cool links
Nemesea have now started the actual recording process for their SellaBand album. “We are currently in pre-production”, explains main man HJ over the phone. “Finishing songs and laying down the individual instruments. These are extremely busy times, but also very creative and exciting times!” Nemesea have just added their latest video diary, which documents the start of the whole process. You can find the link here...
We already knew that the Mighty Maitreya does a very good job at cutting and pasting cool samples. He has now amazed us with his latest video-diary. A cool behind the scenes report on Cubworld’s visit to the Big Apple, last week. Here’s the link, and oh, please ignore the tall bald guy trying to force himself into almost every picture...

Welcome to the Cub
Jacob’s New York Story

Last week JohanV wrote about his adventures in New York. While it served as a good account of how he and Cubworld went from one place to another, meeting studios and producers, one important aspect was missing: the artist’s point of view. So, this week we try to make up for that as we invite Jacob Kongaika, aka Cubworld, to write about his NY-visit in his own words...
By Jacob Kongaika
First impression of New York ‘Holy crap!!’ I was blown away with the size and speed of everyone and everything. There was such a hurry to get things done and moving. The horns honking at red lights and the speed walkers…crazy. Reminded me of Jack Johnson's song "slow down everyone your moving too fast. Frames cant catch you when your moving like that". On top of the distracting city I was so late to meeting Johan, I didn't make a very good NYC first impression. But who could blame a little island boy for not knowing his way around one of the biggest cities in the world? Hahaha.
Icons on the wall. So lets get down to the music which is the thing I did really love about NYC. The fast pace I can totally live without but the music I can’t. We started out walking into Bassy Bob’s studio only to be taken aback by the musical icons on the wall and Grammies welcoming us to the presence of a pro. It was intimidating and exciting at the same time. Records I spun all the time growing up and this guy had the chance to be on a first name level with them, so when Mr. Brockmann spoke, Cubworld listened.

Mr. Brockman spoke, Cubworld listened
His approach to music came out just as you would have thought and also showed the secret to his success. He was so kind not only to want to work with me but to also offer me a place to stay. This is some what of a detail I am trying to figure out still with going to record in NYC. Where I lay my head at the end of the day will impact the album. As far as I'm concerned, I would love to sleep right next to the microphone in the studio. Anyways, So meeting him was an amazing way to start off the day.
Amazing songwriter “Carrying my guitar around with me to the next spot to meet the Brooklyn Noise team was a ‘trip’. We met at the home of amazing songwriter, guitar player, producer Kiyanu Kim. Very peaceful and very comfortable, we met him and Chris Lewis, the manager of the team and we sat down for a listen to some of their projects. They played me a song that blew my socks off. Not so much vocally but the layers of sound and emotion that they put into a simple song just made me close my eyes and say ‘that's what I want my record to sound like’.
"They played me a song that blew my socks off"
My genre was touched in what they played and I felt connected on another level. Kiyanu was also interested in listening to my music so we stepped aside to have a listen. He told me that he thinks the whole project should be "easy and very enjoyable". Again, I felt like they not only were interested in working with me but also had the experience with the genre. If only I could figure out where I’m gonna stay hahaha.”
Conan O’Brien Moving on through the big city we met for drinks, (I had a Coke) lol, with David Margolis. The guy is so excited to just be around music and his passion totally showed. My eyes lit right up when he told me he has worked with System of a Down. I over played very album from 1999 on . Anyways. So talking with David I felt real comfortable telling him everything I felt about my album and about music. He asked a lot of questions that made me feel like he really wanted to know what I wanted. He even tried to get me tickets to the Conan O'Brien Show lol. Again another connection with a pro that made my day just keep elevating. As you can tell from a day like this the decision of who to work with is not very easy and on top of that where am I going to rest my little cub head at the end of the day in a studio in NYC?

Alphonzo from Sony Music Studios
Mastering genius I tried to detach myself from the whole day when I went back to the hotel and just be able to clear my mind before I start brain storming my decision. I will stop there and let you know the decision after I talk it over with Johan and the SellaBand team. Sorry for the bad ending. I will tell you this though. I met with the coolest dude (Alphonzo) at Sony Music Studios on Thursday. He gave Maitreya and myself the grand tour of the place. It blew me away. The dream place to record and work for anyone in the music industry. It was great. We met the mastering genius behind the Red Hot Chili Peppers, System Of a Down, Kanye West… you name it, the hits came out of that building. They are very excited about SellaBand and the revolution in the music world and seem happy to be a part of it. I would love to get my music mastered there. So check back my friends for the next episode of Cubworld getting into the studio. And also to see if he finds a place to stay.
Aloha!
Jake
