Recording Artists Update
Three albums released, four more already quite far into their recording process and two more to hit the studio soon. You’ve read all about Julia Marcell elsewhere in this Tribune, but how are the other ones doing? We asked them to write a short update in their own words. Six wrote back with a short update, one missed the deadline and one wrote their own alphabet update…
Nemesea
This is where and what joining SAB has brought us so far:
AT Productions: A wonderful booking agency who will make sure Nemesea will rock a lot!
Believers: Lovely people who made our dream come true!
Concert @ sea: Although a bit disappointing, a lovely experience!

Galaxy studio's: Just one word…WAUW!
Hero's: 1. Pim, Johan, Dagmar and Chris for giving up their jobs to go on this SAB adventure, not knowing where it would lead them. 2. All believers that believed in the beginning, during the first couple of months. They didn't know what would happen but they had faith in the concept!
In Control: Our pride!
Jake (Cubworld): Working with him was amazing! He's so talented. We are proud to have him on our record!
Katie Melua: Our album will be distributed in Benelux by Rough Trade who also distribute the albums of DJ Tiësto and Katie Melua. Something to be proud of.
Like the air: After putting this song on our profile page and reading the reactions, we knew we were on the right road. We were confident that the New Nemesea was the right choice!
Media attention: Newspapers, magazines, Radio and even television!
No more: Our profile was the first place where we put the newest Nemesea track NO MORE!
On our way to 50K…: …and after that, we've learned and experienced a lot. Good and bad things. It makes you stronger, we're still In Control!
Pim: Flirting with Chantal Jansen was hilarious, the guys in Nemesea are jealous!!!
Quote: "Always on the look out for the next big thing I'm proud to be involved in this first Sellaband project" - Ronald Molendijk.
Ronald Prent: Rammstein, Guano Apes, The Police and now Nemesea 'In Control'!
We are very very proud!!
Sieff: Adam…need we say more? He's the apple of our eyes!
Tony Platt: He was amazing to work with! Can we do that again, please?
U.A.R (United Arab Republic) – Believers from 39 different countries all over the world!
Video's on YOUTUBE: Our official youtube account – www.youtube.com/nemeseaofficial . This is one of the places where we will keep everybody updated!

Zero tolerance: We support everything SAB says about this in their previous tribune!
Love,
Manda, HJ, Sonny and Steven!
Second Person
Things have been going really well for us, we're currently in the middle of scoring the music for a feature film which is due for cinema release in April next year and we've been in meetings solidly over the last couple of months. Things have been getting busier and busier for us, and as a result it's becoming harder to manage everything ourselves. As a result we've been meeting with some managers and record companies - things are going well but we don't want to jinx anything by saying too much right now. Needless to say we're still developing new ways to get our music out there and are
headlining the IndigO2 at the amazing O2 venue (Millenium Dome) here in London on the 27th October. This will be our biggest and most important UK show to date and we will need as much support as we can get - so if people are free it would be great to have the support! Apologies for the shameless plug but it should be a great evening and lots of the other bands on
Sellaband that we've become friends with should be coming along to party with us too...we can't wait!”
Clémence
“I read with great interest the "Alphabet" published in the Tribune last Tuesday. As always, it nicely reflects the general spirit as well as the aspirations of SellaBand. I am very happy to see that this big family keeps growing every day with more believers and artists who will feel the great joy to reach the 50K!As for me, as you know, we have already recorded some arrangements at the Metropolis studio in London. The result is wonderful and very promising! We will then be recording my voice on October 20th at the Omega studio in Paris with the amazing producer Haydn Bendall, knowing of course that some songs will stay in their French version while others will have two versions, one in French and one in English. I am constantly preparing for that so I can do my best. Afterwards I think the mixing will take place in London. I am very excited to finally be in the studio and to know that this album will soon be coming out! I will make sure to keep you posted on the evolution of our work.
With all my love and sweetest thoughts for my wonderful believers.”
Lily
“As many of my believers know, my recording started pretty late. Choosing the songs, re-arranging them and dealing with the expected Summer holidays set me back quite a bit; however, we've been at the studio almost every day and I'm so happy to say drums, bass and most of the percussions are done. Our goal is to finish recording end of November. I'm really excited and can't wait to let you listen to my new songs. Yeeahhhh besotes…”
Maitreya

Kia Ora!
I have just got the final Master today of my first Single "Harlem Streets". It will be released on Thursday, October 11th and that will be the grand opening of my shop on SellaBand. The song will be downloadable for free and I will be following it up over the next month with a video and remix (by Mark from Second Person under solo name of 'The Silence').
We are now putting the finishing touches on the rest of the album and I will be releasing two more singles over the next couple of months before I release the album in full. Everything is going great! Thankyou so much to everyone who has signed up to the maitreya e-Street
Team, we will begin spreading the word on Thursday by bringing "Harlem Streets" to the world!
Love & Light, maitreya
Mandyleigh
“Hello Beautifuls, I am so excited to let you all know that I will have a flight booked to the UK on the 20th of October until the 2nd of December. I can`t tell you how much I will be looking forward to working with the wonderful Mick Glossop and all of the musicians who have been carefully picked for my album. They are extremely versatile and have many credits to their bows.
They are ; Liam Genockey (drums), Tim Harries (bass), James Lascelles (Keyboards), and Johny Scott on guitar who will also be the Musical Director. Of course I am lucky to have Adam Sieff working with me too. I would love to meet some more of you if possible, but as you can imagine I will have a very busy schedule. It would be lovely though. Thank-you so much again and again for this chance. My love to you all always XXX And of course BE BAD. :)”
Vegas Dragons
“Pre-production on 12 new Vegas Dragons songs should be finished very soon. We are currently on song 7 and very pleased with the results so far. Producer Phil Tweed is doing a brilliant job. We will rehearse the new songs later this month and record the drum tracks at Sony BMG Sydney in November. Vegas Dragons are still very active on SellaBand and we would love for you to drop by our page and say "hello". Thank you to all our wonderful Believers for giving us this amazing chance. We are working very hard to make sure you will be happy with the outcome.”
A Trip to the Big Apple
Believer Walter Braunsteiner’s diary

He was the $1,000,000 Believer, remember? It may already seem a while back, but for Austria’s Walter Brainsteiner it all became reality when he flew to New York this weekend, to hook up with our very own Dagmar and SellaBand Recording Artists Maitreya and Lily. Here’s a little diary he wrote for the Tribune!
Friday: Dagmar, who has been already been in NY for a few days for some Sellaband meetings , picked me up at the airport.
After a 24 hour day I was not too tired for dinner with Lily. So I called her and she organised a table in a Cuban restaurant close to the hotel. The restaurant was crowdy and full of athmosphere. Lily´s boyfriend Hector and some more friends of Lily joined the table with us. It was a long night with great food and a lot of Mojitos. The highlight was Lily's salsa-performance with Michael, a friend of hers. Lily was like a twister and the crowd applauded a lot!

Saturday, noon: Hector and Lily picked us up at the hotel to bring us to the Powerhouse NY studio in the Bronx where she is recording. By the way, the Bronx is far away from the image it had for us Europeans a few years ago. The studio is situated in a silent and cosy living area.
There we met the producer-duo: Charlie and Pablo. Pablo has already joined Sellaband too with Insomnia.
Wow, these two are really freaky, funny and have a lot of great ideas. They are two real characters. First Charlie showed me his studio. It is a small one but very comfortable and relaxing. Afterwards Charlie and Pablo gave us some samples of Lily´s songs. They have not been finished up to now but I was very impressed.
Charlie gave us also some samples of music he already produced in the past. Well, I am no expert but these guys seem to be top ones!
Later on Victor who will do PR for SellaBand in the US joined us at the studio. The longer the day went on the more ideas grew in Victor´s brain.
A few hours later we left to meet Maitreya in his studio in Manhatten.
There the guys were within the final work for Maitreya´s single coming this week. It was very interesting to see them really working on the song. Well, I just saw some graphs like an electrocardiogram but they looked like they knew what they were doing. The song already sounded good for me. So I am looking forward to hearing the real mastered result and I am curious if I (as a simple consumer) can hear a difference between the final result and the version I heard on Saturday evening.
Saturday, night: Maitreya, Dagmar and I met his girlfriend (also known as Pebbles) at a Japanese restaurant where we had once again a great dinner and a lot of beer.

Sunday: After having breakfast with Dagmar and checking out of the hotel I walked to the Disney Store to spend some time and a little money there.
Then it was time to travel home. The plane had some delay but I arrived well. At the moment I just don´t know if my luggage landed or if it is still in NY. Well, maybe someone will wash my clothes :-)
Thanks again to SellaBand and their sponsor to make this great weekend possible and a real big "Thanks" to Lily and Maitreya, their friends and their producers for spending their time with me. It was an awesome weekend!
See you,
Walter
Q + A Gisel de Marco
By the time of going to press for this Tribune, there were artists from 117 different countries on SellaBand, including a handful of jokers from Antartica. From such a faraway place as Argentina (which is actually quite close to Antartica), comes Gisel de Marco, who takes both her art and our concept very seriously. Currently climbing the search pages with confidence, here’s an introduction to our most ambitious, unsigned South American artist…
Who is Gisel De marco?
“Hi! Delighted to meet you! My name is Gisel and I am a twenty-six year old singer and composer from Argentina… Ever since I can remember, I see myself having a great interest in music… Starting out with a toy piano, then moving on to lessons while very young. You could say I began producing and composing songs at the age of ten, making my first humble recording at home with my toy piano: an album titled "Blue Bay"! All the while I could not imagine the immense love I had hidden inside of me for singing. That came by surprise and much later, at seventeen. My life changed forever on a night out with friends at a karaoke bar. Upon much pushing and insisting by my friends and despite my extreme shyness and nervousness, I finally gathered up the nerve to sing ‘Hero’ by Mariah Carey.. Almost immediately, a hush fell upon the crowd, then they began to applaud and cheer, everybody went crazy! I couldn’t believe it! ..I realized then that it was singing which I did best. It was what connected me most to the feelings of others. That was the most important moment of my life. The moment of epiphany, when I came to know my first and greatest love of my life: Music. In the following years, I went on to win various contests on television such as ‘The Bachelorette’ and ‘With you in Hollywood’ both from Warner Channel. The last of those allowed me to travel to L.A. to sing, giving me greater exposure to the U.S. and Latin America. In addition, I did some acting in theater and runway modeling shows in my country, which allowed me to further compliment and attune myself as an artist.”
What made you join SellaBand?
“A friend and musician in my band told me about the SellaBand concept and felt I could participate in it. So I came to your website and after reading the proposal, became encouraged to be a part of it! One of the things that most surprised me from SellaBand was the friendship and the bond between Artists and Believers. The chance to create something together, a project with a common destination and goal. To share in this is beautiful, as is the music being created. SellaBand is an excellent idea, born of the imagination of people with great vision, generating outstanding creativity from the artists and in the world in such a manner that it is creating a new music industry.”

What are your experiences so far?
“SellaBand is another of the things that have changed my life. Where else could have I displayed and shared my songs on a global level, with people who love music as much as I do? Not only this but to have met the kind of marvelous people who have given me their full support and friendship from the very first day. It's incredible. SellaBand has done this for me. At night I wait anxiously for the hours to pass quickly so that morning will come and I can connect to the internet again. To read the beautiful messages that those who believe in me have left me. When I feel bad or sick, they all manage, somehow, to get a smile out of me. SellaBand marked a before and after in my life and I am very happy for the day I met them. In fact, at this precise moment, I am finishing a song dedicated to SellaBand and all my believers, called ‘I found you.’"
What inspires you to make music?
“Moments already lived have inspired my music as well as the experiences of others. I attempt to write songs that not only are representative of me but for those who are listening whose hearts may be touched by it as well. Through my words I want to tell stories that are capable of awakening emotions and leave a positive message. I believe I have achieved this when people tell me my songs have been with them during moment in their life. That they identified with those words and it gave them strength to continue. As an artist that is the greatest reward, to feel I have done something worthwhile. It only inspires me to continue composing more. Because there are so many things to say!”
What are your ambitions?
“My ambition, first and foremost is to continue creating music. To grow each day more in what I do and to work tirelessly to give the public the best that comes from my heart. Right now I am working on some songs in English. English songs will predominate but I believe music is a universal language by which you can say so many things that cannot be expressed by words. Through this I can be present with people in good times and in bad, like a best friend. What's more, it's beautiful to share in a dream that so many have come to dream with me. To reach the desired goal of 50k and fufill the promise I made to them on the day they believed in me.”

What are the chances of you becoming our first South American based 50k artist?
I hope my chances are good! haha! Since I signed up with SellaBand I have been growing constantly and have seen many people to get to know me and believe in me. I have the honor of having the most wonderful Believers ever, who not only have invested in me but are also friends! I truly hope this community grows more every day until we reach the 50k and I may be able to make the music they so richly deserve.”
Are there any other SellaBands you particularly like?
“SellaBand is bursting with excellent artists who surely did not get a recording contract due to the bureaucratic or commercial arrangements that exist in all record label companies. But who are every bit as talented and creative as those who are recognized worldwide. I have a varied musical taste. I don’t believe a different style than that which I like is any worse or better, just different. When there is variety, quality dwells everywhere. There are artists on SellaBand that I admire enormously, such as: Bim, Lucia Iman, Diztar, Francis Rodino, Lola Perrin, Angie Arsenault and so many others who are immensely talented and will very soon achieve the recognition from SellaBand they deserve.”
Why should people believe in Gisel De Marco?
“Because this is only the beginning of so much that I can do and give of myself, and I just can't wait to get started! Because I am chock full of ideas and songs in my head, on paper, on rocks! everywhere! I'm just dying to get them developed for you to hear! Your help is getting me closer and I know that you will not be disappointed. For this I am working incessantly to make you proud and convince you that the 10 dollars you spent were really worth it.”
Our 50K Plan: Nearfield

It’s taken them blood, sweat and tears to reach page 1 of our Artist Search, but now that they are there, Portugal’s Nearfield have every intention to get to 50K. In fact, they are already quite sure about the kind of album they want to record…
We already announced our post-50k plan at the end of last year when we showed the world our aim to work with Maitreya, just after Jamie had remixed our 'Intro' track dubbing it 'Feeling U'. Since then our intentions haven't changed a bit and, with Maitreya's standards rising higher, we were so glad we had made that decision! We used Amsterdam's SellaBration to settle a gentleman’s agreement during a short meeting that took place on the after-show morning breakfast at the Paradiso! JohanV agreed to our plan personally in Jamie's presence and Jamie himself said 'yes' once again!
So far, after almost a year with SellaBand, we have discovered new talented artists and have experienced and learned quite of lot of new things too and we are determined to add some extra spice to our plan by getting even more involved with this incredible community! Right from the start we wanted to find everything we needed inside SellaBand and after 12 months we’ve come to the conclusion that SellaBand artists are more than able to sustain an all SellaBand CD! With this thought we proposed to Johan a double CD dubbed 'FM Broadcast'! To this challenge Johan responded: 'why not?' Well, he didn't say 'yes' but also, he didn't say 'no', right?

Why a double CD you may ask? Simply because we would like to give other artists the chance to show their work and believe in this project (SellaBand, of course) even more, and also to add some extra value to our SellaBand CD! To the point: CD 1 will feature a set of 10 to 12 new tracks to be produced exclusively by Jamie (Maitreya) and CD 2 will be all Black Board tracks, dance floor oriented, each one remixed by a different SellaBand artist with production abilities!
Artists selected for this purpose, although we have yet to invite them:
GD Allan
Kirt and/or Knaeckebroedt (up to mister multiple 'K' to decide)
Metricks
Pieps
Simeon
Phil Tweed
Moorlandt
Snelle Fellas
Radio Orange
Jap Jap
Q-United
Delco
and
SillyMotel, Nearfield twin, surprise remix as an extra track!

Concerning the voices featured on FM Broadcast CD1, Mysti Mayhem is a sure thing, together with Nearfield voices, Sylvie C, Voice (Paula Sá) and Silvia Mateus ! We will also invite Marie Hannig from Blister to feature one of the songs!
So this is Nearfield plan! *
* Any similarities with any other artist's plan are purely coincidental as we neither have ever read any of the previous ones published on the Tribune nor asked or discussed privately about them!”
Julia Marcell: 50K while we were away...
In exactly three months time, Julia Marcell raised $50,000 on SellaBand. Raising the first 20K in 4 weeks was already impressive, but to collect the final $10,000 in a mere 6 hours is just incredible. The SellaBand Tribune caught up with artist number nine, who is now ready to enter the recording studio...
Wow, that was probably the quickest countdown ever? It happened on Friday, when we are all out on business. Can you describe for us what happened, please?
“I can tell it from my perspective. I woke up in the morning and turned on the computer to see what's up on SellaBand. A day before there was some really fast part buying going on so I thought maybe it will continue and I was really excited. I opened the browser, the page loaded and I couldn't believe my eyes: it was crazy! I was supposed to go to my university class that day, but instead I stayed in my pajamas and with no breakfast, but glued to the computer. Then Pim called and said: "Julia we think you may hit 50k tomorrow or even today, you must make a thank you video". I told Pim I had to wait for my friend to come from work to lend me the camera. Then an hour later Chris called and said "No Julia we need the video now! You're gonna hit 50k in a few hours!". So I was running around calling, trying to get the camera and when I finally got it I sat down, recorded a quick take of myself, uploaded it on the server and joined the chat to talk with the Believers and Artists. It was so exciting, we had great conversations, some funny moments and the counter was going up every minute. And then Chris wrote a comment asking the Believers to stop buying parts because they won't make it with the video. That really heated the things up. The Believers said it was funny to hear "stop buying parts" from SellaBand Crew so they decided to race with them - what's first - 50k or uploaded video? The video was there first... by 30 seconds! :)”
We understand Polish media has also 'jumped' on you. Can you tell a bit more about that?
“After the article in "Gazeta Wyborcza" not only more Believers showed up, but also more press. I can't say more right now, but there's a chance I'll be on Polish TV very soon (but shhh, that's a secret! ;) Everyone seems to be very excited with the idea of SellaBand and happy for me.”
Can you describe your feeling how it felt to see that full 50K on your page?
“At first it felt amazing, like winning the world championship. But then it felt kind of... empty. My friend teases me and every time I check my page, he asks "how much do you have now?". And actually everytime for one second I try to check it, but then it hits me "dude! you've got 50k already!" ha ha ha Yes, I'm addicted! :) But apart from that, when I look at the golden bar I see my album in the making and that makes me very excited and happy.”
So, what's next, please?
“The album! I soon go to Berlin where I hope to meet Dagmar and Lars Grewe to talk it through, listen to some demos and decide on things. In the meantime I'm preparing for some November shows and some of them with my string quartet! I'll be playing in Gdańsk, Wrocław and in Leeuwarden. I'm currently trying to book two more Polish shows and I'm gonna post all info on my page as soon as I know all the details, so stay tuned.”
Weekly Update
The new Terms & Conditions
As reported in our e-mail on Friday, the new Terms & Conditions have just been 'released'. Apart from being clearer than before on several issues, they are first and foremost a reflection of the fine tuning our concept has undergone in the last few months. As stated before, there aren't any drastic changes, but we would still advise Artists and Believers alike to read them carefully. Better safe than sorry, is the expression that comes to mind here. Two related remarks: The initial contracts were made up in German and were then translated into English. This time we are using the English version as the original. A German translation will be made later. The second point we want to make clear is that in these documents you still see SellaBand referred to as the 'GmbH & Co KG', as before. This will be changed into the AG (Aktiengesellschaft) as announced in the Business Plan, last week. While we have met all the necessary requirements to change the structure of the company, and have registered the new company through a notary of law, the paperwork still has to be signed off by the German authorities. This can take up to a few months. But, because the amendments in the T&C's were long overdue, we decided to move ahead, regardless.
Chart Analysis
The Weekly Charts are proof of what an unusual and hectic week it has been. Almost half of all the New Parts Sold this week went to Julia Marcell and gave her an unprecedented countdown sprint. This will be her final week at #1, though... Then Jonatan Cerrada Moreno seemed to be ready to be crowned as the new king in town, but a sudden row with his songwriters saw him lose more Parts than he gained. Only to see... Lucia Iman benefit. There's a nice little story about her as well in this Tribune, under the Community Singing section, which sums it all up. Anyway, she jumps in at #3 and seems to be gaining momentum again. BPM (4 - 2) and T-Ka (11 - 5) are benefitting from their Top 3 position, let's see if the same will happen to SolidTube, who are at #7, this week. The ever active Jon Robert is this week's Biggest Gainer (12 - 4) and is, incidentally, artist #30 to go over $10,000 in budget on our wonderful platform. Too many new entries and re-entries to mention, this week, which confirms basically what a restless seven days it has been. That's why we find peace and solace in our Special Mention of the week, which goes to: Black Jack.
Back in at #6: our creative and pro-active Italian friends. If there is any justice in this world, they should be among the next flock of artists to go over $10,000 in budget. The boys from The Eternal City, should not become The Eternal Pre-50K Band....
Proper Distribution
Exactly one week after announcing our partnership with Rough Trade Distribution, we are now happy to confirm we have a deal with Proper Distribution in the United Kingdom. Proper is the largest independent music distributor in the UK and supplies over 1,000 specialist stores, as well as all the major retail chains and supermarkets. SellaBand is really proud to announce our partnership with Proper, as they are exactly the no nonsense type of company we are looking for.
Last Friday our very own Johan V met up with Operations Director Steve Kersley (pictured left) and National Account Director Steve Matthews (pictured right). Comments Steve Kersley on working with SellaBand: “Proper Music Distribution are delighted to be working with SellaBand. We share with SellaBand the philosophy that great music can be made away from the mainstream. We are also jointly dedicated to enabling artists: SellaBand is enabling the funding for albums, we that the resulting release be available to music fans wherever they may be. SellaBand has a great concept, a great team and already, some great music.” We are aiming at a late November in store date for Nemesea, Cubworld and Second Person and are planning our first ‘UK Retail & Media Assault’ for early 2008.
The Week That Was
Well it was quite a week indeed, wasn't it? It must have been extraordinary to watch Julia Marcell sprint to 50K. Must have been, we say, because really we weren't there. All of us were out for business meetings abroad and we had only young Chris to defend the fort. Julia took us all by surprise, so Chris spent all of Friday morning trying frantically to make Julia record her little 50K movie and then get it online in time. Her final $10,000 went in something like 6 hours.... don't think we've ever seen that before. Or will again, anytime soon. Because BPM have changed their tactics; they want to become the first SellaBand Recording Artist with over 1,000 different Believers. Currently at over 800 Believers and some 20% to go in budget, technically it is still possible.
Speaking of percentages... The % of heavy American rawk on page 1 doubled this week. Wetwerks are back among SellaBand's elite but there are some fearless ladies on their tail; both Tiffany Gow and Mysti Mayhem have the front page of the artist search well within reach. Oh, and have we told you about the final result of Sommersby's neat little competition yet? It was a nervewrecking final between the aformentioned Wetwerks and Austria's Confused 5. After extra time they finally settled for a draw, making it by far the most spectacular match on a Champions League Wednesday...
Office Powerplay
Hey, we’re music lovers too, you know. And this week we have been listening to…
Alix: Roger Hill - Out of Order
Chris: vAi - Joy Ride
Dagmar: Spencer - Inside Out
Dolly: Bim - Call it a Monday
Johan: BPM – Wake up call!
Pim: Kamara - Shame

Don’t let Lucia down…
Believer Loren Hall writes: “Hello SellaBand community! I know I'm not the only one puzzled as to why Lucia Iman went from a perennial top 5 artist to now absent from the charts. I do think I have found the reason, and it is stunning. It's a situation that provides rare insight into human nature and is a lesson for the Sellaband community. It turns out Lucia's fall from the top of the charts coincides with her breaking up with her boyfriend. How could this possibly affect her popularity on SellaBand? Well, he had owned 100 shares and when they split, he sold back his shares. This drop in shares sold knocked her out of the top 20 for that week, which affected her visibility, and the drop also appears to have made buyers, who naturally equate shares sold with support, skittish. This double-whammy has triggered a classic market scare causing a negative spiral of less buying and more selling. Yes folks, it appears Lucia's drop has NOTHING at all to do with her talent. It appears her support has waned because we are very much a herd animal. Lucia sings like an angel, and I can't wait to hear the album. By revealing this information I know we can get that momentum back for her - she certainly deserves better than this. So, I just want to say to you believers out there: "Don't panic! There is no lion lurking, this oasis is safe for drinking!" Lucia remains one of SellaBand's top artists.”
