P0A7A on your 2023 Prius is NOT an alternator code — it’s much more serious.
P0A7A = Generator Inverter Performance / Drive Motor “A” Inverter Performance.
On the 5th Gen Prius, that means the MG1 Inverter inside the Hybrid Inverter Assembly is detecting low performance, overheating, or an internal fault. MG1 is the small motor-generator that starts the engine and charges the HV battery.
Do not drive it long like this — the car can shut down and leave you stranded when the hybrid system disables.
1. What Causes P0A7A on 2023 Prius
– Failed inverter assembly (most common, especially if you had a coolant leak)
– Low / air-locked inverter coolant — check inverter reservoir (separate from engine), should be full pink
– Loose or corroded orange HV cable to transaxle
– Failed MG1 inside the transaxle (rare, but happens)
– 12V battery weak causing inverter logic faults
2. Quick Checks You Can Do Before Replacing Anything
1. Check inverter coolant level — In engine bay, right side small white tank marked “Inverter”. If low/empty, you have a leak. Top up with Toyota SLLC pink only.
2. Check for leaks under inverter — pink crust around hoses = leak caused overheat
3. Check 12V battery voltage — If 12V is under 12.2V, charge or replace it first and clear code. Weak 12V causes false P0A7A.
4. Scan sub-codes: You need a hybrid-capable scanner (Techstream, Autel). P0A7A has INF codes:
– INF 512, 514 = Inverter internal failure
– INF 321, 322 = Overheat due to coolant
– INF 334 = MG1 issue
What scan tool did you get the code with? Does it show INF/detail code?
3. Fix by INF Code
If INF 321 / 322 (Overheat):
1. Refill and bleed inverter coolant system (see previous steps)
2. Check inverter water pump is running in READY — you should hear/feel it humming
3. Clear code and test drive
If INF 512 / 514 (Inverter failure — most common):
You need to replace the entire Inverter with Converter Assembly. That’s the procedure I sent you in the last message. Part for 2023 Prius FWD is around *G9200-47140* but confirm with VIN, retail ∼$1,800 – $2,400.
Toyota has a T-SB for early 2023 Prius inverters — some are covered under the 8yr/100k hybrid warranty. What is your mileage?
4. What NOT To Do
– Don’t clear it and keep driving — you will overheat and kill MG1 in the transmission, then it’s a $5k+ repair
– Don’t disconnect HV cables without insulated gloves and waiting 10 minutes
– Don’t replace the transaxle yet — 90% of P0A7A is the inverter on top, not the transmission
