About me

When I was a kid I wanted to become a farmer. Can't remember why exactly, but it possibly had something to do with the prospect of free milk and all-you-can-eat bacon and eggs. I have a faint memory of me fighting each day with the family cat over the fresh creamy milk straight from our neighbour's farm. Most of the days the cat won. I was a skinny kid.

I became a newspaper journalist instead. One has to do *something* to make a living. The only time I got free dairy products in this profession was when some angry farmers threw a couple of eggs and a carton of milk at my head in a big protest in our capital, which I was covering for my newspaper (true story).

Apart from being a workaholic I am a huge film, music, literature and comic book fan with too little time on my hands. Music has become my biggest obsession (mostly because I have no musical talent whatsoever ; on the other hand I can draw a bit -comics-, have a rather good pen -literature- and a vivid and very visual imagination -film-), which results in being a musical omnivore, who buys up to about 80 cds a year, ranging from folk to death metal, from singer-songwriters to 'nu rave', from indie to dance. Recently I came back from a concert with the teenage daughter from a friend in my car, together with two of her school friends. They were chatting about how they liked the gigs of The Shins, Mstrkrft, Battles, Arctic Monkeys et alii at a recent festival. I wanted to tell them how I like all those bands too, but kept my mouth shut. I know how your youthful enthousiasm can be ruined in one blow when an old sod (37 is bordering the senile when you're 18) tells you how he really digs that band you like so much...

Whatever.

For me, Sellaband is a unique opportunity to be involved in the music you like, even on the smallest possible level. I don't have the resources to spend a lot of money on parts (I would if I could), but I really want to support the artists I find interesting. I really don't care if I make money out of it, that's not what Sellaband is about. And I think the majority of believers in this superb community share this opinion. There's some really good music out there (out here) that wants and deservers to be heard...

My Blog

I'm just a big girl.

(for a week)

11/02/2008

See, I *told* you yesterday. Today I got a phonecall from a program on national television (Volt with Martine Tanghe, for you Belgian readers), to ask me if I was interested in being a part of a little experiment on their show. Once again, they mistook me for the *other* Hans Otten. Happens to me all the time. A bitch when they have your mobile number...

10/02/2008

Yay! +1000 profile views, that's worth a celebration!! (popping sound in the background... ; pity then it's just a bottle of sparkling water)

Nah, 1000 visits to my li'l profile just makes it clear I could just as well add some more personal stuff about me. Not that there's a lot to tell...

Well, to begin with *something*: a lot of people asked me about the 'mask' in the profile picture. There's no special reason for that, actually, apart from the fact I liked the character called Rorschach (from the Rorschach blot test that covers his mask) out of the comic Watchmen from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. It's a superbly crafted graphic novel about how people can't cope with losing control over their environment. Although it was considered unfilmable for more than fifteen years, they're (those pesky Hollywood people) putting a movie out shortly. I'm not looking forward to it. I'm one of those geeks who consider it unfilmable. And it's being made by director Zack Snyder from that ridiculously macho '300' movie. Being a film buff clashes here with being an comic nerd, but that's just how it is.

Oh yeah, AND I've got quite an ugly mutt. That's why the mask.

Yes, my real name is Hans Otten. I didn't know that the name shows in the url of my profile page, untill Ellie Williams brought it to my ignorant attention. Nice one, thanks Els. Age is no nickname of mine, I just made it up as I signed in on SB. It refers to the little 'h' I use to sign my mails and letters. If I remember it correctly, I wanted to sign in under 'Hans', but it was already taken. I didn't want to use my full name, because I know it messes with the heads of Belgians a bit. You see, there is *another* Hans Otten in this fleasized country (although it's not a common name at all), and the other one is a bit famous as he's a television presenter. To make it worse: he comes from the same small village as I do. Nope, we're NOT related... It's just a major coincidence. Oh, to make sure: I was here first, born about six months BEFORE him. Anyhow, him being famous and all makes my life and work as a journalist quite hard. There's not a day that goes by without people asking me -when I talk to them on the phone- 'you the one from the tellie?'. No, I am not. I can even read the disappointment in their eyes when they meet me in person...

Well, you can call me Age, you can call me Hans... It's all just fine.

(I've got to stop typing for now. I'm getting seasickness from that swirling lady in the Heineken (ceci n'est pas une bière) advert on the right. What *is* she doing actually?)

Kate Bush, Tori Amos... Yeah, we've heard these comparisons before. Still, it's excellent company to be in... And yet, Angie Arsenault is playing in a league of her own. She combines beautiful piano playing with a soothing voice, great song quality and compelling lyrics. Listen and get hooked.

'She's a knockout' is a knockout of a song. But Daniel has a lot more to offer than just the one song that won't leave your head. He can dig deep in your soul with his beautifully crafted compositions. You may not notice it at that moment, but you absolutely will eventually.

Hey man, glad have some impact. I still enjoy SAB and it's a matter of being productive with the time I do spend here. Still, near 8K is a heap of dough and I'm happy to have the start that I've had. I've still got a few tricks up my sleeve! GD

Hi Age,
welcome aboard, you sound like you have already sailed some rough waters, deathmetal and grindcore can sink a ship! You will make a good sailor.

Hi Age,

May I ask which new song you 'fell in love with'? Was it Landscape of Dreams or World in Your Hands?

Just curious ;)

Hi Age,
thank you for buying a part, I hope you will enjoy the journey to Pluto with us. After we get there. who knows? But I will try to make it interesting.
BTW, I am older than you, and I love my daughter giving me new music too. Lately it has been Dresden Dolls and Lilly Allen. She likes my music from these days and also from 60-70's. Live would be unimaginable without music.
kind wishes
Dave Allen
