About me
I heard sellaband.com mentioned in a discussion about where to look for independent music not long ago, and decided to check it out. I've always been a "pay for music" sort, and even though mainstream music distribution (at least here in the U.S.A.) benefits the wrong people -- people whose tactics have increasingly offended me of late -- and costs more to the consumer than it should, I still haven't reached the point where I won't buy music "the old way".
But I am always looking for a better deal, both for the consumer and for the artist. If I can find a wider range of quality music for less cost while a better share of profit goes to the band, I'm all over it. That's what I think I see here. So I figure I'll hang around and check it out. Test the waters, see how it works in practice, all that.
I like to think I listen to a pretty good range of music; rock, metal, alternative, folk, country, jazz... not really good at categorizing music, so when it gets down to it I just listen to whatever I think sounds good. Same way when I pick up the guitar myself -- I just play whatever I can learn... but I lack the dedication to call myself a musician anyway, which is just as well as I'd be unable to write a song to save my life...
Enough idle rambling... off in search of more music!

My Blog
5/8/2008 - I may still keep a bit of a low profile for the time being, but things are looking up as far as the situation from 4/26. A shorter-term crisis it turns out.
4/26/2008 - My presence may not be felt here so much in the near future. Some things that are very important to me have turned for the worse; so my mind just isn't with this place right now, and may not be for some time.
4/3/2008 - I've decided to try a bit of an experiment. Overall I like the music of Suchtmaschine -- it's grown on me a bit -- and clearly it's an opportunity to get in as an early believer. So I'm doing two things I generally don't do:
1) Buying more than 1 part without any particular incentive; I figure, on the assumption they hit $50k, this will be as positive an experiment as possible to see about selling an LE CD.
2) Buying into a band with the knowledge that I may not be able to hang on till the end. While the option to withdraw parts is always there, it's an option I've never exercised, and for the most part unless a band expressly "gives up", it's an option I don't want to exercise. More to the point, I don't generally buy parts if I think I might not stay the course. I want to think I can hang on to these parts and see a great album come together that breaks the normal conventions. Time will tell...
The review I posted to their page is trimmed down from one I posted in the forum. (And yes, it shifts the focus more to the music and has a bit more positive spin; I treat profile-posted reviews as a form of promotion, whereas the more critical aspects of a review are, IMO, mostly for the Artist. For the record, the one they thank me for in my Comments section is the original version on the forum...)
3/3/2008 - I'm having one of those "what will they think of next" moments that may well reflect my limited exposure to the world of guitar-related equipment these days...
Just read the latest updates joOp wolters made to his page. He describes in his Info section (and provides a video to demonstrate) how he uses a guitarsynth to get the sounds of other instruments. I've heard of this sort of thing before, but never actually heard it in action (as far as I know); and frankly, I always assumed it wouldn't work too well. Apparently I was wrong.
As an occasional guitar player (though only as a hobby; nowhere near the skill this guy shows), I find this fascinating. It's not just the thought that you could immitate another instrument; it's the question "can this be used to create a new, different sound with characteristics of both the guitar and the ... whatever you're synthesizing?"

Banshee Celtic Band $6K! Thanks!!! | 19.02.08 | 3
Truly I need an Irish pub in which to listen to this properly.
It may not be quite in the "main stream", but if you enjoy good celtic music (and really, if you don't, what's wrong with you?), then I think you'll agree this band should make a great addition to the SAB line-up. I, for one, want this album to get made.
I first heard Banshee's vocals in their version of Whiskey in the Jar (as of this writing, posted as one of the three tracks on their SAB player). On a first listen, I caught myself distracted that the vocals' accent isn't what one's accustomed to hearing in a celtic song. Unconventional, perhaps, but as I listened a second time, I found myself coming around to qutie like the unusual (in my experience, at least) combination.

The Quahaugs - | 08.03.08 | 2
You've gotta love seeing a musician on a mission.
If you're like me, you could listen to this music a few times without ever recognizing what it's about (ok, with the exception of Weeds Amongst Flowers, which should pretty well explain itself at a glance...) but still find it quite enjoyable to hear.
When you finally do pick up that one line of a song that makes the meaning click in your mind, you realize that the writing is one of the Quahaugs' great strenghts.

Suchtmaschine | 04.03.08 | 2
These guys clearly have a great deal of skill and a vision of what they want to create; and they don't let that vision get clouded by mainstream assumptions about music.
A range of instrumental skills come through right away in "Kraeuterboy, Ahoy!", and while the long track with its shifting style seems at first like "several songs stuck together", this may reflect the assumptions of the listener... not all good music fits in a 3:05 timeframe.
Kumasi flows along with an evolving sound to create the kind of track you can just listen to and let your mind drift along.
Music like this can take some time to appreciate, and as such it may be a challenge for Suchtmaschine to build their audience; I look forward to seeing how they meet this challenge.

Vegas Dragons LIVE - 10% of the way to Europe!!! | 03.03.08 | 2
I think it's outstanding that some of the $50k acts are looking beyond the first album and looking to keep funding their projects with SAB.
And a SAB live album? Even better!
It can't be denied these guys have what it takes to make the $50k march ... they've done it once already. So now let's put 'em on tour!

AIOIA | 28.03.08 | 1 | |||
More unusual than most? Perhaps; you might find that a sci-fi story through music is a bit alien to your CD collection... though indeed it is not unheard of.
By projecting scenes from a fictional world, AIOIA offers a chance to really let your imagination wander with their music. This world may seem all the more mysterious as we get only a narrow window into what is clearly a broader picture; to the listener following along with the story, I highly recommend a visit to the AIOIA myspace page.
But even if you choose to let the story flow around you without comment, this music can stand on its sound alone and is well worth a listen.

For all the range of styles around SAB, it's might be easy to overlook a good, solid rock sound. These guys have pulled one together that's definitely worth hearing.

LAdy hAidEe - HeART MedicinE | 02.03.08 | 1
One of the things I was looking for when I first came to SAB was a broad range of music; and while I didn't see it at first, it's certainly here.
LAdy hAidEe has a very distinctive sound. At times breaking away from the normal expectatoins about melody and rhythm, her tracks could fool you. If you're not paying attention, you might think there were nothing to hear; but do pay attention, and you soon realize that this is not the chaos it might at first seem.

Radio Orange 567 believers: Thank you Frantisek, MaryJo and Kim 'Cyberon' Groenbek | 21.02.08 | 1
Give these guys a listen, and you will hear some great-sounding music. Quite a bit of it, too, if you check their own web site.
Then double back and listen to Terminal One (posted among the three tracks on their SAB page as of this writing), and you'll see that this is a band that's both willing and able to "step outside the box" and create something you might not have expected.

joOp wolters | 17.02.08 | 1
joOp wolters came to SAB a couple months ago with some amazing instrumental tracks (more of which, it turns out, can be found on his prevoius CD's). He's adding a vocal dimension to this next project, and from what I've heard so far, I'd say it's shaping up to be some great music.
Both the vocal and instrument al tracks have plenty of energy and outstanding guitar work. He anticipates a number of vocalists contributing as well, and I look forward to hearing what they'll add.

Plenty of experience in the business, plus a strategy for how to make the SAB model work its magic, plus a healthy level of cynical irony and wit, plus a blues/rock sound that carries that attitude flawlessly. This is a combination of elements that should draw any believer's interest.

One of the first artists I believed in when I joined SAB, Tiff Gow quickly made an impression with the energy she puts not only into her music, but into her presence on the site as well.
Numerous collaborations with other artists, frequent updates to her page (including a steady rotation of new tracks, every one well worth hearing), and consta nt communication to her believers... a clear commitment to the music; this is an artist who shows that she believes, too.

Angie Arsenault | 06.03.08 | 1
The first I heard about Angie Arsenault (unless perhaps I speed-read past her name in the forum) was a comment she left on my profile. No stated purpose, no "come hear my music"; just a sort of "hello" I'd suppose.
That's all it took to get me to check her profile; and hearing the music is all it took to make me a Believer.
To me, it sounds that good. Couldn't give a detailed reason -- my vocabulary for describing music is perhaps a bit limited -- but I'd recommend anyone to give it a listen and see if they don't find the same.

Ellie Williams | 17.02.08 | 1
Ok, at this point writing a review of Ellie Williams may seem like shooting fish in a barrel. Still, a couple points are under-represented in the reviews I'm reading from others, so here we go...
We all talk about the music; and why not? I don't honestly remember what drew my attention to her page, but I can say that once there I'd listened to less than half a track when I'd decided this was music worth buying into.
The tracks themselves are the most basic thing we want to look for; but to really believe in an artist, there are a couple other things worth noting. A background with music is always an advantage. Some experience with the industry doesn't hurt. No shortcomings there.
More importantly, though, here is someone recording tracks at home, and coming up with something worth hearing. No huge budget, no army of engineers; just an individual working with the tools and media at hand, and excelling -- a true Artist.
When someone can do this, it shows real talent and real drive; this in turn will lead to success.

May 01 2008 13:20 CET AIOIA_2 New tracks! &12K! TNX Veblen!
Hi Mark!
Today, the 1st of May, is a great day. We just reached 10K, thanks to your belief, thanks to your thoughtful spotlight or/and review. The spotlight and review competition had such a success that we got a lot of great writings about our band, and it’s very difficult to judge and choose without a jury, that we have not. For this reason, AIOIA members have decided to give every of you 10GP for your awesome participation and help.
The winners are, under alphabetic order: Berry (Raasdorp), Colin Acton, Douwe (for his awesome global work), Ed The Cheesehead, Mark Adelsberger, Pacarina and Shinjite-Iru. Those who have kindly opened a spotlight about AIOIA without a text will receive 1GP each. Some close relatives were not participating to the contest.
So, my dear friend, you win 10GP and the producing and publishing rights which go with these parts. Don’t be in eager, it will take a little time to send the GP to each of you, cuz we have to decrease the parts from my account one by one!!! (not easy!)
Thank you soooooooo much, you’re a brilliant one!
Have a wonderful day, much love to you and yours,
Alex, Steph, Nadj, C-leen, UnCover, Dji, Didier and Andreï for AIOIA
I feel pretty happy to offer you these parts, dear Mark, you deserve it so well, with your precious words and clever presentation of our work. Great!
Have a wonderful day my friend!
